Thank you. That is a debate that will continue to rage. Most of us don't think of our quilting as art. I gues that is because the world in general doesn't have a real appreciation of what we do. I am one who rarely duplicates exactly, a quilt pattern that I have seen. I always us different fabric, colors or even resize it to make it my own. Even when I use existing templates and another's pattern as a guide. In more than 40 years of quilting I have only made one wallhanging from a kit. I do like to quilt pre marked white on white or other wholecloth quilts.

Quilting has always been a "craft" to me, but you made a good point. I never follow a pattern exactly because I always "feel" it a little differently.

Wikipedia defines art as "the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way to affect the senses or emotions." Nothing brings more joy or comfort than a lovingly made quilt!

Interesting article, thanks.
Several of my friends are considered art quilters, many having quilts hung in museums and art galleries. http://www.marilynhenrion.com is one of them. Night Thoughts being my favorites

I make what I consider to be creative, beautiful quilts, but they are not art quilts.

I say yes that they are.

I can't draw or paint but I can create quilts that are loved and cherished. They are art to me.

I think it's art, sometime a little premative, I'm thinking of mine.

I think it is definitely art. I once discussed art with a friend who said to him it has to be either aesthetically pleasing or meaningful, which I thought was a good way of looking at it. Quilts are often both, and even if they're not that pretty to someone, they can mean a lot to someone else.
