This is for anyone who does this
How long does it take to put the kits together? How long do they give you? I am interested in starting to do this next year but don't want to overload myself with work and my daughter Just want to know on an average how much time is donated to this cause? daily, weekly, monthly? |
It only takes a couple of hours to do the tops. Everything is cut EXCEPT the squares for the 9 patch and you sew the long strips together and then you sub cut them. But total takes me about 2 1/2 hours to do the top. You will have fun making them. You get 6 weeks to complete them.Very simple. I make one every month. I use my "allowance" money to have them quilted. But I am going to practice doing fmq on my machine soon so I don't have to have someone else do it for me.

I do them too and enjoy it. They always go together very quickly. I get to practice my FMQ on them and do a good thing at the same time.

I quilt them on my home machine in a X type grid. They don't take very long and are so cute. They also ask that you do one from your own fabrics...you don't have to do the second one. I suggest that you order one kit and see how it goes.:)

I contacted the closest chapter to me and it took her two weeks to answer me. Then she would be glad to have me volunteer and she would send me a kit to complete. I told her I was also working on some from my fabric. 6 weeks later sent e-mail that she had not forgotten me but had not gotten kits put together. What kind did I want. I told her infant. She would send it the weekend. Here we are 4 months from the time of contact and no kit. Oh yeah, the 11 quilts I made from my stash to donate I gave to the local EMS and fire. At least they appreciated getting them. If that's the way it works I'm not sure that anything I donated would get to where it belonged. Not a good experience. Will donate but not to them.

I got mine done in a week. I haven't learned to FMQ, but I machine quilted it with a zig zag stitch.

Not long at all. If you use their kits, they'll send you brightly colored fabrics for the top and the back, along with the pattern. They ask if you use one of their free kits you also include a quilt you've made with your own fabric.
I typically request 2-3 quilts at a time and have no problem getting them back out in 4-6 weeks (and that includes time spent making the other quilts for them with my fabrics). Takes me about 75 min to put the top together. I spray baste the quilt so that takes about 15 - 20 min (but may take me 2 weeks before I get around to it)
To quilt it I can do it in 20-60 min depending on quilting. The binding an hour or so. You can get 2 of them done in a day. |

Email directly to Quilts for kids at www.quiltsforkids.com and request a kit from them. I BELIEVE that this is where the main head quarters are at. I have always gotten mine in just a matter of about a week from the time I ordered them. So please please don't give up. |
I have done a few now. It only takes me three days about 1.5 hours each day. I go through the mail with their headquarters.
