Melissa that is a great site, I remember my sister complaining about ties needing stabilizer because she found out the hard way and had to do some blocks over. She made this awesome burnt orange quilt with some of the ugliest ties ever- who knew they would look so nice in a quilt.

How about a dresden plate for the ties? You only need a small amount of fabric.

If you cut the ties in such a way that yu have the end finished, ie the point folded uner, all that is necessary is to stitch them together. They would be already wedge shaped like for the plate. Just wack them off to length and stitch them together. Ot cut pieces and use a woven interfacng at the wide end to give you a smooth edge. The dresden plate isn't hard to do. It was the very 1st one I learned to do.

I have a ufo quilt using tie material. The pattern I am using is Cathedral Window. I used the tie material as the inside material and black cotton as the background. It really pops out with the black background. This quilt is intended for my dad's retirement. He keeps putting it off, so I do too!

I actually entered a square as described above in a quilt square contest two years ago and it won at the local level! It was of course passed on to the next level of competition and I never heard any more about it so I guess local is all the attention it got. They were supposed to ultimately put all submitted squares into a quilt to give to the children's wing at a hospital in the area.

I agree you must use a woven iron on stabilizer such as Shirt tailor. I've used others and it doesn't pay to use the cheaper stabilizer. Open up the ties and iron on the stabilizer then you can use what ever pattern you want. I like the crazy patch as I like the look with the satin tie fabric and I love using my embroidery stitches. I also like the idea of using old suit jackets for the borders. Anything goes, just be creative and let your imagination go. I have been saving ties for years to make quilts but never got the time yet. Doing too many alterations and quilts for customers. Got to go finish another t shirt quilt.
