i am going to attempt my first rag quilt, thought i would try for a baby since it would be smaller and give me an idea of how this works. found a pattern on the internet where you could use flannel instead of batting for the middle and then you did not have to make the x - you just have to join the squares. no other quilting except joining the edges. has anyone ever made one like this or do you think it will work? i believe it had a 1/2 inch seam allowance?

I have never done it that way, but would think you have to make the middle flannel as large as the outside squares so that when you stitch the squares together you hold the batting (middle flannel ) in place, otherwise it would move and bunch up. Just a thought

that is what it said to do. i think it sounds easy enough to try. i think i will give it a shot. got the flannel on sale so i really don't have that much invested in it.

also i was planning on making 5-6 inch squares. that way they are not too big and yet not too small . thanks for the advice.

When i did mine, I just did 3 layers of flannel with all the blocks the same size, (5 inch squares I think), and just clipped all three layers together. it was super easy to do and not too thick to go through the machine at all.

That is how I did mine, just sewed the layers together. I did not X mine, and it was nice. after clipping, it frayed beautifully. The mother ( it was a baby blanket) loves it.
