Rag Quilt Batting Question
 

Has anyone ever made a rag quilt with quilters cotton on the front, flannel on the back and traditional batting in the middle? I'm making a quilt for my Mom and Dad's 50th wedding anniversary and I'm using quilters cotton on the top and flannel on the bottom. I'm trying to decide between flannel batting or traditional batting. The two previous rag quilts I've made have been flannel on both sides and traditional batting in the middle. The flannel batting would add to the ragging but it doesn't look as "quilted" to me. But maybe I'm focusing too much on one square... Any thoughts?

With the flannel backing it would be plenty warm with just a flannel batting. It would be lighter and more pliable with the flannel innards. I suppose only you can decide which look and feel you want. If the trial square feels too flimsy then the quilt may not suit you in the end.

i make raggy quilts with batting all the time- it's the best way to use up scrap batting.
i cut my batting squares 1" smaller than my fabric squares- place in center- quilt- then join into raggy quilt, clip, wash ---wonderful!

I made a rag quilt with cotton on the front and 2 layers of flannel. I wanted to use flannel as the innards as I wanted a fluffy, thicker ragging. No, it isn't puffy when you use the flannel vs batting but then I didn't have to cut all the batting pieces smaller than my squares. I used my Accuquilt Go with the Rag die and I just put a layer of cotton and 2 layers of flannel thru the machine at a time. This way, my squares were all assembled and ready to be sewn together. Also, it is plenty warm enough with the 2 layers of flannel!
