I am making a rag quilt with big blocks 10" unfinished. What is everyone's preference on seam allowances one inch or half an inch? In the past I have always used 1" seam allowances but with only half an inch I can get almost 6" more quilt if I only use half inch seam allowances. Thanks!!!!

I use between 1/2 and 3/4. If the seam is to big on a small block you lose the block. Especially if there is a design in the block.

I have made them with different size seams. Right now Im working on one that I used a small seam - 1/4". Im not sure how it will look but just decided to try one with a smaller seam. Im sure it will be fun when I tart cutting into the seams. lol

I use a 1/2" seam on my rag quilts. I don't like the look of the 1" seams, they're "too big" for me.

I use the 1/2 inch seam, I think that works out great for difference sizes.

half inch is just fine..and judy, the 1/4 inch will be good too..just clip it a liitle closer together is all..it will end up looking like chenille ( chenille by the inch looking) ! and be very pretty!

1/2"

half inch for mine also !

thanks - looks like the consensus is 1/2" now I just have to figure out how I am gonna put it all together -augh!!!!

I use 1/2" seams. I have two of these quilts so far. In my opinion if you use anything smaller it will not give you enough allowance for the clipping. Your seams will also be stronger with 1/2" instead of the 1/4".
