I am making a rag quilt for my DGD. The squares are 11.5" with three layers...top cotton and then two layers of flannel. Since it contains no batting, is it necessary for me to sew the X across each block? The blocks are quite large and am not sure if this warrants sewing the X. Thanks for help and recommendation.

I'd sew the X on the blocks as they are pretty big and will kind of puff out with the X. May in Jersey

If I understand you correctly, I would still sew the X accross your blocks to help them keep from distorting out of shape when the quilt is washed. Even though there is no batting the fabric may still move about a little bit with wash or wear, and the extra stitching will help it to hold up longer. :)

I would do the X just to keep everything in its proper place

Definately sew the X in the middle of the block. It will stabilize it and it will last longer.

I sew the X in blocks that big. However, I always use a serpentine type stitch rather than a straight stitch. That way if I don't go exactly straight it is not noticable :)

Thank you all for your input. I WILL sew the X.
