Ok ladies need your help.I made a lap rag quilt and my daughter loved it and took it home . My soon to be son- in- law loves it to and took it on the boat he works on. But it is to little for him. My DD wants a 6'long and 5' wide rag quilt I made her go get the fabric so she will see how much fabric cost. My question is how much should I charge to make this quilt by fathers day. I

Everyone will have a different opion, go with your guy. How many hours, how difficult etc. I usually don't charge my kids, but give it to them for an occasion, like birthday, Valentines Day,etc. Good luck, no matter what they will cherish it because it is from you.

I do't know...I would never charge my kids. I think this may be interesting to follow.

Sorry can't help you because I never charge family for the quilts I make them. I am sure there will be someone here on the board who can help you with what to charge.

My mom commissioned me for a quilt and is paying me for the fabric, quilting, thread, batting, overhead, plus double that. I was really surprised that she was paying me, but I'm not complaining!

So, with that information, a rought estimate would be how much is costs to make it, times two would be a good starting point.

Personally, I would have your daughter supply the fabric. That seems like you both are giving the quilt!

I would let her pay for the fabric and thread atleast, and then if she wanted to give you something for your time, it would be her choice. I have done quilts for various family members this way. My sister always doubles the price of fabric, my brother paid for the fabric and gave me a gift certificate for a LQS, and another brother just paid for the fabric. It is difficult when making commissioned quilts for family, so, as long as they pay for the fabric...I'm good to go. As far as my kids go...as long as it is for them and not outside the family, I don't charge them. They ask for specific things once in a while, but not often, so it usually ends up being a gift of love.

when my adult children request special quilts if i am going to be compensated for them all i ask for is cost of materials- i do not try to make a profit from my kids- just cover costs- it does let them know fabric is not cheap- there is a reason why my quilts are expensive- they have a better appreciation.
the quilts that have been for my kids, by birth, by marriage, by adoption- i do not expect any compensation for- but if they call and ask me to make a quilt they are going to give away to someone else then they have to pay for materials.

Do I have this right?? You are charging your daughter to make a quilt for your son-in-law? Do not charge anything! This is your family! Let your daughter pay for the materials but you make the quilt for love, not money.

I made this rag quilt for my daughter. Her boyfriend wanted one but not in girly colors. My LQS had a sale so I purchased civil war fabric to make him one. While chatting with my daughter, I mentioned the great buys and how much I saved on all my purchases. She said she was sorry she had asked for a quilt because she had no idea how expensive the fabric was. I told her I bought fabric because I love her and like the fabric. I finally had a reason to buy civil war fabric.
