Rag Quilt

I am getting ready to make a rag quilt with flannel. I am thinking of using flannel as batting rather than regular batting. Has anyone used flannel in the middle? Did it work?

I have several rag quilts. I have only used batting in one, only because some of the squares were already sandwiched (a UFO found at the thrift shop).

I have used 1 layer of flannel and one layer of denim on 2-3 quilts. The denim was from old jeans and I have fun with seam and pocket placement. A denim backed quilt is very heavy and warm.

I have also used just 2 layers of flannel for baby quilts. I like the look and weight.

When you use just two layers of flannel or 2 layers of flannel (I did one that way too), you do not have to stitch the layers together with an X.

I have probably made a dozen rag quilts. I use the nice flannel for the front and back layers and an inexpensive plain flannel for the middle layer. Have fun with the cutting at the end of the process. They are cute and cuddly and warm.

I've made several rag quilts and have done it both ways. I especially like using flannel instead of batting because it provides an extra rag edge which in turn makes the "rag" fuller. My favorite rag quilt was a reverse appliqued with four layers of flannel and my cut-out was a leaf. It's a pretty heavy quilt but oh so warm.

what a pretty rag quilt, I am making 7 for gifts and I'm on #5 I use scraps of batting for I don't know what else to use them for

I use flannel instead of batting...it frays nicely and makes a nice soft edge and adds some color.

I always use 2 or 3 layers of flannel, no separate batting.
