I have been posting this message and emailing companies that offer the kits for baby rag quilts, but the message is still not getting through!

Those pretty raggy quilts are a choking hazard for babies!! Just imagine a baby sucking and chewing on those little strips of fabric. A teething baby will chew on ANYTHING!!

PLEASE save your rag quilts and give them to children who are 3+ years.

IF you MUST make a rag quilt use fleece. Fleece will not ravel out and come apart.

Rag quilts shed threads for a looooong time. I can certainly see where this would be a hazard for babies. Having three young children myself I know all about having to watch them constantly. They will find anything to put in their mouths.

That was something I didn't even think about. Thanks for the warning.

Thanks mamagus. I'm sure most of did not even think of this.

Thank you for letting us know about this... I would never have thought about the choking hazard...

Me neither - great advice L!

I put this on the quilting board every year. It scares me how many baby quilts that people make with those ragged edges.

Keep telling people is all that we can do! I have made it my own little project to keep saying it until everyone hears!

Rag quilts are so cute for babies but I never thought of the choking hazard. Thanks for the warning.

Thank you. That didn't even occur to me. I am ready to start making a baby quilt. It won't be a rag quilt...or maybe I will use fleece.

also do not use monofilamet thread for baby quilts. It can easily wrap around a finger or toe and not be detected.

People also put buttons and doo-dads on baby quilts. NO, NO, NO. I lost a great uncle due to a choking hazard when he was 3.

And babies can lose toes or fingers that way. :(

bearisgray 09-27-2010 05:30 PM

Thanks - I knew about buttons and the monofilament thread.
Didn't think about the threads coming off for babies.

Also, loosely knitted or crochet afghans could be a problem.

I knew of this, so never make rag quilts for babies. For baby quilts, I never use monofilament thread or any kind of buttons or those small craft decorations that are ironed onto the quilt.

Just realized that this is an old post but the message is still timely.
Mamagus, thanks for posting this.
