Rag quilts

Has anyone ever made a rag quilt using a heavy flannel jelly roll? Was wondering if it held up well. Thinking that the seams may be too close together? Thank you.

Using 2.5” strips of flannel (in my head) seems like it might give a bit of a chenille look. I’ve never done one with strips before, but it seems doable. But it might get pretty heavy, though. You might make a very small sample with scraps and see what you think.

Rag quilts work best if at least .5" and preferably up to 1" is left out to rag. This would mean very little of the strip would be left. As bj said, it could get very heavy, and you might not see much of the fabric. Of course you could turn some seams in (not ragged) and some seams out (ragged).

I use 1/2 inch seams for rag quilts. Flannel needs that and to have a nice" fray", in my opinion. So that will make a pretty narrow strip. I think it would look good but I think all of that cutting to make the fringe would be very tedious and makes my hands hurt just thing of it. :)

Thank you everyone. I was thinking the same thing about using the narrow strips, but since I haven’t made a rag quilt, wasn’t sure.

I would make four patch, nine patch, or 16 patch blocks using 1/4 inch seams, sewn the regular way, and then sew the blocks together ragging only the outside edges of each block.

My only rag quilt was made from flannel shirts, backed with jeans donated by a beloved family member. I made the blocks 5 1/2" because it was easier to cut them with my 5 1/2" ruler. That was a major mistake. All the extra seams made the quilt heavier and very difficult to clip. It would be more useful and easier to handle if I would have made 10 - 12" blocks and the different flannel fabrics would have shown up better.
