I have only made one rag quilt before this one I am working on. The question I have is should I rag the outside edge or should I bind it as you would a regular quilt. The quilt I had done previously I put a binding on it. This is a flannel baby quilt. What would be your suggestion for finishing off the outside edges?

Personally I like a binding on the edge of my rag quilts. I think it finished them off.

I rag mine all the way around.

I am in the process of making my first raggy quilt....I hadn't thought of binding it. Maybe for a baby quilt the bound edge would be a good idea.

I just do rag all the way around. I never thought of binding them.

Thanks I decided to rag all around. Got into chat and that's what they all did too. I used a triple stitch around the outside edges and just finished the clipping. It is at the moment in the washer.

This is a good question. I have not done a rag quilt yet but plan on it and I wondered the same thing. I may try it both ways and see which I like best.

I rag all the way around, too, but it doesn't have the double thickness, so it doesn't look the same and that bothers me. I like things to be "even". Maybe sometime I will try binding one. Never thought of that.

To get the outside edge "raginess" to match the inside, you can sew a double thickness of one inch bias strips around the outside edges of the quilt. Sew in the center of the strip, 1/2 inch from the edge of the quilt all of the way around. If you are going to clip them then you would not have to use bias cuts, just clip them like you did on the rest of the quilt.
You can even use scraps of fabric sewn together to do this, when they ravel all you see are colors, not the pattern. For a different look, you can even use different colors to give it a more pronounced look.
