I Googled swastika & the arms are turned different than yours. My suggestion is to make a few more blocks & see what they look like altogether. I like your block & hate for you to cut it up or have all that ripping.

Kathy Buell 09-17-2009 05:15 PM

No you didn't. to make one you would have had to had and L out of the same fabric in each block that met in the middle rotating like a pinwheel. This block is great the way it is and when you get more of them together you will see a very pretty zig zag in your pattern.

MadQuilter 09-17-2009 05:45 PM

I come from Germany and I don't see one either. Assuming that you will make more of these blocks, as you assemble them in the same order, the stair-stepping effect of the rail fence will show up more strongly. You are judging your work too early. Keep going and all will be well.

MrsClaas 09-17-2009 05:52 PM

Funny you should mention the swastika. My youngest son is looking at houses and one of them had a quilt on the wall of all different blocks. I pointed to the one that looked just like a swastika. Then we looked at this house and I pointed out to the realtor what it looked like. She said she would definately tell the owners not to show the quilt as it was while trying to sell the house. I think it was innocent and yet it stuck out like a sore thumb!!

dixiechunk 09-17-2009 05:57 PM

Sorry, the Swastika just screams out at me too. I think it's because it's a single block. If you had a quilt of many of these blocks you would seen an overall pattern and the swastika thing would be less obvious. I like the suggestion to pick apart the four separate sections and play with them til you like the look.

I think you will see a totally diffrent quilt when it is done. Some free motion on it and it will all look beautiful!

juanita's kid 09-17-2009 08:38 PM

when you add additional blocks the visual will look more like steps than a swastika....

butterflywing 09-17-2009 08:42 PM

i'm jewish.

when this quilt is done you'll find that the floral and the green both form stair-steps, not swastikas. the lilac will be a free-floating shape separating the other two.

it's kind of you to be sensitive, but in this case, go for it.

LaurieJane 09-17-2009 09:22 PM

Thanks everybody for the great suggestions and honest opinions. I have completed just 5 blocks for this quilt - and every block will be different. The blocks will have a purple latice work around them with green cornerstones. Just to put it in perspective I put the 5 blocks on the purple fabric and this is what it looks like:

The final quilt will be 8 inch blocks, 7 blocks by 7 blocks. It will have a lattice and cornerstones, and a 6 inch wide floral border. The finished quilt size will be 80 1/2 inches by 80 1/2 inches.

My DH is telling me just to get over it - this is still a 'novice quilt' so just live with the mistakes - it will make a great story someday (I think he is tired of me bemoaning of what to do with this block).

quiltnana 09-17-2009 09:33 PM

Laurie Jane,
IF you need any of the patterns from the quilt Shop Hop let me know which you have and I can send you the rest.

butterflywing 09-17-2009 09:38 PM

if that block will be used without being attached to others like it, then yes. it does look like a swastika even though it's reversed.

bearisgray 09-17-2009 09:43 PM

I was thinking that block was going to be part of an over-all design - not a stand alone block.

If it were mine, I would take it apart along the four units and rearrange them - it kind of looks like someone sitting in someone's lap if I really stretch my imagination.

joy 09-17-2009 10:19 PM

Rearrange that block... you will never be happy with it like that... would have worked well if it was going to be a rail fence pattern... there are other ways of changing it ... it might be a good idea to scrap it and make something different... lovely work....

cassie69emt 09-18-2009 03:10 AM

you could take out the seams for the two pieces on the right hand side and put your floral fabrics on the inside to make it look a bit more like a pinwheel

great idea. imo, can't be offensive to anybody.

bstanbro 09-18-2009 07:32 AM

I like that better too. Great idea, and great solution. BTW, I showed it to my husband without any intro, and he saw the swastika straight off.

Esqmommy 09-18-2009 07:39 AM

I just showed it to my DH. He doesn't see it as a swasticka (SP??) and his mind is very logical. He's an engineer, so I know designs are very natural for him. Anyway, I'm also a Jew and would normally be quite sensitive to something like that. Again, I don't see it either.

That being said, I think the image is there for you, and you will be happier if you rearrange the block. Especially since you keep lamenting over it!

Your other squares are quite pretty by the way!

SharonC 09-18-2009 07:46 AM

I agree with many of the comments...the bottom line is "It bothers You". If that's the case make a change or you might run the risk of ever enjoying this pretty quilt.
I think your blocks are great and maybe by taking this block out or altering it...you'd have a quilt you'll love for a long time. Remember, this is just MHO

LaurieJane 09-18-2009 11:35 AM

Ok, I got up this morning after only 5 hours sleep and cut the block into quarters. I put a diagonal scrap of yellow from the block I did before down the center. I then learned a very valuable lesson about trimming diagonal corners! So that is why there are little yellow triangles at the end (I chopped off too much) and now I am afraid the Quilting Police are going to come and take away my rotary cutters :)
This is what it looks like now, and I think I am going to put the 2009 Western Washington Shop Hop Quilt away for the rest of the weekend. I should really go out and enjoy the sunshine and get my back door painted before the rains come. Thanks again everybody!

I don't know if it would make a difference, but everytime I have made a rail fence top I have always started the first block with the strips going down, not across. To me it just looks better and does look like steps.

Great design change LaurieJane!

SharonC 09-18-2009 06:51 PM

LaurieJane - Great adaptation...this is how new blocks are discovered.
p.s. There are no quilt police here :) :)

sewaholic 09-18-2009 07:05 PM

Look out LaurieJane. We are coming around to confiscate your stash. That's the price you have to pay for trimming too much.
Love the new look to the block though.

kd124 09-18-2009 11:19 PM

I don't see it, but if you don't like the way it is, then by all means change it. As mentioned, you can put 4 like fabrics so they come together in the center. Either the green or the focus would work in the center.

Many people do not do the entire hop---I would guess most don't. Do you want to add more because you want it bigger than what you will get with the blocks you have? I ask because I know of people that do from lap size on up. Some only get enough for a wall hanging. I got one block!! I had forgot but went to my LQS and ended up getting a block. We thought of going up to longview or so and getting a few, but didn't. I don't have a clue what I will do with it. Probably a small wall hanging to hang by my machine. LOL.

By the way, did you have fun? My sis and I did it in 2008 and had a blast. When we started we were only going to a few--up to Tacoma. We ended up going to every shop!! Each night she called her hubby and said we're going to be another day.

Bevanger 09-19-2009 04:13 AM

i'm sorry kiddo, but i don't see it. I like how it looks and i think once you make more, it'll take on a whole different look

Hey KD124 - I had a blast! The first day of the hop, my kids were in school, but for the next 2 days (Thursday and Friday) I had them with me. Thank goodness for the DVD player in my truck. We went all the way up to Lynden. I couldn't hop on Saturday and Sunday becuase our family vacation was beginning. I ended up visiting 23 shops, and it was a lot of fun! The fabric is really pretty and I can't wait to see what I end up with when the quilt is all done. I got a lot of advice during the hop from other quilters and shop oweners - - since this was a shop hop quilt, I was told ". . it is special, so you don't ever want to wash it or use it on a bed - it should be a wall hanging. . .", so i don't know what it will be when I am finished!

rosequilts 09-22-2009 09:49 AM

It is not a swasticka(they overlap the bars) and when you have the blocks joined into rows it will be a rail fence. Good luck witht he pproject

ScrapQuilter 09-22-2009 07:21 PM

Looking at your block I think you should have turned your right top block so that the flowered strips would have made a pattern....
That is the only thing I can see to change.
