rayon thread mesh cover ?
 

How do you keep your rayon thread from raveling off the spool? I have an upright box with pegs for alot of them, but the ones that just get dropped into a box could have a mesh cover or something wrapped around them. I'm looking for a "homemade" fix.... rather not have to go out & buy anything if possible, thanks.

I go to Joann's and buy some of the very thin clear vinyl. I then cut it into strips that are the right size for the spools -- I cut them long enough so there is some overlap. I wrap all my spools with this vinyl to keep them from unwinding. I have been doing this for years and I when I finish a spool I can use them on another spool about the same size. I cut paper strips first and when I was happy with the way they fit, then I cut the vinyl.

I have heard that some folks use the Glad press and seal, but I don't know if it is reusable and my strips definitely are.

Thank you so much for your suggestion. At the moment I do have Press'n Seal so will try it out... oh wait... actually I think I may have some of that vinyl in a drawer, may try that out too. For some reason I just thought I needed to have some kind of mesh for it to work. Thanks again!

I use Hugo's Amazing Tape...

Go to your local florest (flower shop) and ask about the little nylon sleeves their long stem flowers arrive with. They usually get more than they can reuse. They are like the nylon nets you can purchase for your cones of thread. They are about 3-4 inched long and 1 1/2 wide. They work great, and they are usually free. My flower shop reuses them, but offered to same me some. She called and I got a baggie of them. Great find.

I bought some hair bands at the dollar store...they are the size you would use for a childs pigtails...about the size of a quarter...they work quite well and you get 25 for a $1. I think that I saw this in one of the Quilting Magazines.

I used to work for a home based florist who did flowers for weddings. We did a wedding with many many Gerber Daisys. Each flower was wrapped with what I call the potato bag mesh stuff. She was going to throw them out, but I took them, soaked them in bleach and rinsed them really well, and use them to put on my embroidery threads. You could try checking out a florist and see if they would save them for you. I am sure they usually throw them away anyway.

Like the others said asks a florist to save the mesh wrappers that come on spider mums. I work for a florist and we get tons of them. I save them and take them to retreats and give them away to everyoneA

I keep a roll of painter's tape right by the machine ... fixes PP sections that fall off from the stitching, labels fabrics with length or any other details ......... and tapes onto loose thread on spools!

my cones ,works well for me, good luck.

Cut a sock top the length of spool and slip over it

I use an old panty hose..I just cut the length I need and sew the side up.. walla..I have covers for my thread..I also sew with them left on.. works awesome.

Someone sent in a tips from Fons and Porters the other day. The adhesive re-inforcing circles used on sheets of paper that have been prepared for a binder works great. They used to be loose and you had to dampen them to get them to stick. Now they come on a waxed paper sheet and they peel off. Pull a small amount of thread to the top of a spool and/or a bobbin (works equally well for both), apply the donut-shaped piece and voila! Mess gone~

What's so special about re-enforcements? Then just use any adhesive label or part of.

A word of caution when you start using adhesives ... you could gum up your threads and create problems. Just a thought!

I have asked the floriest to save the mesh tubes that come on some of his larger flowers like lillies,mums and others. He was glad to be able to recycle them and I just wash them in soap and water ,rinse and rubs between 2 towels and let dry. You can cut them for any size spools you have.

Homemade????????? how about taking a bit of panty hose and make a "sock" for your spool with only one end open.

i use the mesh wrappers when sewing with the thread, but if you have enough, use it for storage too. I use the children's hair bands from the dollar store for storing the embroidery thread. A few of the mesh wrappers came with my machine, so it is enough to use for now. I will check out the florist next time I'm out.

The panty hose idea sounds like an easy solution also.

I sometimes tape the end with the medical paper tape. It works really well also. Not as sticky as clear tape and is reusable.

I agree - don't want to buy one more special thing! A small piece of painters tape works just as well and it can be used for many other purposes - including painting!

I asked my local grocery store to save the flower nets they threw away. When I got them I cut to spool size slipped on.
Worked perfect! The down side after a while they do stretch, but not a big deal just get more nets

Also for bobbin thread you can get a piece of plastic tubing. Cut a slit in top player then trim to bobbin size
