? re: Fusible Batting

I'm making a fusible applique table runner and want to use fusible batting. Do I fuse the batting to the backing or the top? I want to stitch around the applique thru all layers and thought the fusible would work best. Also since this is a first for me, the instructions said cut the square a 1/2" bigger then trim after the applique is fused? Should I wait to trim after its quilted or will that be harder to square up to 12 1/2" block?

Thanks

Fusible batting is fusible on both sides. Many people put their batting down smooth the back over it, fuse. Turn over, smooth top over the other side of the batting and fuse again. I would wait to trim/ square up until after quilting, before binding

Hi Joyce, are you talking about fusible batting used to sandwich three layers of the quilt, or fusible webbing used to fuse in place different components of an appliqué block?

do it as CKCowls said. do not place iron directly onto fusible. just flip to other side and iron again. good luck.

This batting is by Pellon and only has the fusible on one side. I decided to make a test sample and put it on the backing.

Some fusible batting is fusible on one side only.

If you are talking about fusible fleece, I usually adhere to the backing but have used it on the top IF I don't want the blanket stitch of my applique to show through to the back. That way I can do a stylized quilting on the whole piece without having the blanket stitch apparent on the back, if that makes sense.
