Go to Walmart and buy the Brother with the embroidery hoop. Not only is it a good little light-weight machine, but you'll have one that can do embroidery as well. That's what I use mine for. Besides, it has 2 piecing stitches and it has the built-in cutter for cutting your threads. It works really well. You can always take it to the local shop that sells Brothers and they WILL service it. I know that for a fact.

I completely agree on the old model Singers. When I first started sewing I bought a new model Singer since it was the name I grew up with but it was terrible. My Gram's friend retired from the Singer company and told me that they had sold the company decades ago and the machines were no longer made with the same quality as before. The old model Singers sewed like a dream but the new models really weren't that great. I switched to Brother and after they disappointed, I went to Janome and using their machines is like using my Gram's old Singer. I haven't turned back yet and I now have 3 Janome sewing machines (2 for my daughters, lol), a Janome serger and a Janome embroidery machine.

I reccomend brothers, they are always cheap and reliable, try overstock.com

I bought one of this Brothers from wall mart with plenty of decorative stitches almost two years ago and it runs great the only thing that is less great is the small space in the "throat"...(but for 100$....? it was a great choice

You also might try the Janome Jem Gold...maybe misspelled it, but it is a light little machine with a few different stitches.

i bought a smaller and lighter mach. at sears it is blue in color about 3 yrs. ago its suppose to be made by jamone works very well . i bought it for same reason when i got to the retreat about 8 others had the same one cost was about $80

I bought a brand new in the box Janome Gem Gold for $139 on e-bay. It weighs 12 pounds. I love it because I am already familiar with Janome (with my regular machine). I will say that I would not recommend using a much smaller machine for major sewing (such as retreat sewing). I think the size of the machine doesn't do your back any favors when you sew on it for 12-15 hours nonstop! I use my little Gem for classes and for quilt night at my sister's house! Good Luck!

Janome Jem. About 80% of the women at my sew-in have one. I love mine so much that I put away my expensive Pfaff. If you go to a Janome you can usually find a used machine at a good price and my dealer had lay-away.
