Redwork bleeding thread?
 

A redwork quilt has always been on my bucket list. But I know from counted cross stitch that red thread bleeds, what do you do to the thread to keep it from bleeding?

Buy a colorfast thread like Valdani. (not affiliated just a happy customer)

Check the cross stitch message boards. The stitchers know exactly which floss brands and colors bleed or beard. For the last redwork I did I used Aurifil size 12 which is the same as two strands of floss.

If you are doing hand embroidery I have never had a problem with DMC thread bleeding.

I've had great success with Aurifil as mentioned by Onebyone. Size 12 and I've used a couple of the reds and also done some in blue with no bleeding at all.

I used Anchor variegated red/burgundy on my Winter Wonderland and it didn't bleed. The first skein I stuck in a sink of warm water overnight to test it, and no colour bled out. The quilt has been washed a couple times now.

I use the little balls of thread rather then embroidery floss threads. You only have to work with one strand and not fiddle with keeping several strands even. It is Coton Perle # 8 by DMC [ATTACH=CONFIG]550628[/ATTACH]

Thanks y'all several choices, the DMC #8 is what's at J's I will give that one a try. No Valdani thread here, just at shows.

Thanks for all your replies because I have often wondered about the bleeding myself.

I checked my reds from DMC that I often separate and I haven't had a problem, yet. 20 years and no problems.
