Don't have any redwork but I do have 2 quilts with embroidery in them. One I did in shades of pink and green instead of red for a granddaughter.

Oh my, some beautiful work here! I love doing hand stitching of any kind. There is a blog I follow that is just lovely. Jenny of Elefantz (www.elefantz.com). She has lots of tutorials, has her own designs, free patterns, etc.

Hi, something else to consider with embroidery and redwork is to put a stabilizer on the back. At the LQS where I work we highly recommend "Shape Flex" . This is an iron on stabilizer that goes on the back of your work It stays in place. It is very lite weight and sews through like a dream. Its main advantages are it a) stabilizes your work, therefore no hoop needed b) it hides your tails c) if you have to jump it will hide that also. It will also sew well into your block if you decide to put your work into a churn dash.

OOOPPPS forgot. If you are using a frixion pen, put the shapeflex on before you draw your design otherwise the heat to affix the shapeflex with erase your frixion pen.

I do have a funny story about "redwork" embroidery. This was back a few years ago at Walmart. I was in the fabric department looking for thread. A young woman walked up, staring at the threads, looking quite confused. She had a few spools of thread and she asked me if I knew anything about embroidery. She said "Which of these threads is the correct red for redwork?" I told whichever one she liked best. More confusion on the face. Then she said, "I want to do some embroidery on a project. I really wanted to use black but my designs say RED." I told her if she wanted to use black she could use black. (Please remember they walk among us) Her eyes flew open wide and said, "Isn't that against the law?"

I also learned to use the stem stitch. I have tried the back stitch, but have trouble getting a consistent look and always go back to the stem stitch.

I got hooked on redwork after hearing a mini-lecture at a quilt show by Beth Dix of Primrose Lane. I predominantly use a stem stitch with Valdani 12 weight pearle cotton - a little more expensive than some other threads but worth every penny.
