Haven't hand pieced in years...but that is how I began quilting over 30 years ago. Starting and stopping 1/4" from the edges allow you to be able to press seams to the less bulky side, and helps in accuracy. I made dots and used those to align pieces.

Maybe it is time to try some hand-piecing again! It really is accurate.

That's a very helpful site. I'm trying to get myself motivated to try to hand quilt a quilt. The last time I tried it, I had an awful time, but I think my batting was too stiff. Something softer next time. The first quilt I hand-pieced, I started and stopped 1/4" from each end. It went together so well, and was the most perfect piecing I've ever done.

Thanks for the info. I'll do that on my next quilt!

I have been hand piecing for MANY years ,I sew all the way across,I can match seams better that way and never have a little "pucker" lol.

When I hand piece I go from end to end.
