I use the sticks for applique. Never had any issues. I use Clover Fork Pins for matching seams.

look for water soluable glue sticks..i use "school glue" sticks.
they wash out.
i use washable liquid glue to do the binding..i bought a special tiny tip at Joanns for this. this leaved the binding in place,without using pins or clips , until i sew it..i know it is an extra step..but i like to do it this way. it holds the mitred corners nicely!

I'm having trouble visualizing how this works - sounds like a great idea. Do you glue your seams instead of pinning?
