Reinforcing corners

Hi all! I was curious if anyone has any tips or tricks for reinforcing the binding at the corners of the quilt when machine binding. I want to make sure that my baby quilts will hold up well for a long, long time https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

My favourite machine binding is Charimas QB tutorial titled Machine Binding with flange. I find it to be very sturdy and pretty as well. I also like to use it on wall hangings because it makes a firm frame.

Thanks Tartan! I will check that out!

I do some extra tacking stitches in place where the miter comes together on the front to give extra strength there. not sure it it helps, maybe just placebo!

My two favorite tutorials when learning about getting those corners done!

A technique for angles.

I like to do a two stitch back tack and come back to the stitch off point. Use a ruler and mark the point of the stitch off.

If you are using a 3/8 inch seam allowance, mark the stitch off point at 3/8 inch also. For binding that is 2 1/2 inches wide, the 3/8 inch seam allowance gives a better fold line. The binding fold is more even between the front and back.

I use an automated stitch on my good old Bernina to stitch around the binding. I made a tutorial here somewhere.

If you choose to bind in your traditional manner, you might use a decorative stitch on top the corners. You will probably have to sew it slowly due to the thickness.

Thank you. The video and written directions are just what I need to improve my mitered corners.

What's the most effective way to use a decorative stitch to finish binding? whenver I have done it, the stitches seems to "pile up" on each other at the corners because the material gets so thick there that it cannot move through very smoothly. do you change a setting or do anything differently to get it to look good in the corners?
