Reliable irons

Has anyone used a Reliable iron? Supposedly they never leak or spit due to a patented system that heats the soleplate separately from the water/steam. I'm just wondering if they are worth the $170 price tag?

Thanks.

I've just got the newer model. I had the original one for about 3-4 years, but it needed filters, and the supply of filters dried up. I had to get rid of it. It never did spit, drip, or do any other nasties.

The newer model doesn't use separate filters, but I would use distilled water. I have filtered water, and from looking at the filters of the first Reliable, there was some crud in there. That will be a wait and see on this model.

There is no indication on the dial of fabrics. You would have to get the temp ranges from the manual. It does steam like a champ. I was using an Oliso, and the Reliable beat it hands down on steam. I worked in a dry cleaners as a kid, and we steamed almost everything. I still do.

It does shut off after 8 minutes, but there is a bypass. If you don't use steam, you would also need to read the manual. I don't find it any heavier than any other iron.

You can use it as a vertical steamer, but again, read the manual. It does put out enough steam.

I really don't know anything about them that's useful information except that I used one last month when I took a class at my LQS, and that thing was heavy! Also, it sure did put out the steam!

My brother & SIL had the Velocity and it was great. They've since switched to the Vivio150 steamer & that's what I want for my next "iron" (it's the same price). But to answer your question, they never had any issues with the Velocity spitting.

Yes they are worth the price. I love mine. I think it's the Reliable 150. Check around for the best price. I got mine at a local sewing machine shop for $30 cheaper than everywhere else.

I have the Velocity Digital and I LOVEEEEEE this iron.

I had the Velocity Digital until my DD borrowed it to steam press a suit. I doubt I get it back. LOL

Quilty-Louise 10-29-2016 07:22 AM

Two years ago when my oldest daughter moved back in with us
(after being fired from her job for needing to do OB visits due to
her HIGH risk pregnancy) she asked if she could borrow my iron.

I gave her my old cheapo iron, she came back to me and handed
the iron back saying "how can you use this piece of junk for your
quilting".

My reply I let you borrow that piece of junk because I refuse to let
use my "good" iron, and risk having you to steal it from me.

She walked away mumbling about how I knew her to darn well.

Me three! I have the Reliable Digital Velocity V100 - stupid long name, but the iron is great. Best steam ever, can't leak. I don't usually use steam, and it's also a great dry iron and has that bypass so it doesn't shut down if you want it to stay on.

Onebyone 10-29-2016 08:48 AM

DD borrowed it
I don't mind. I"ll buy another one. I prefer her to use the best so she'll know the difference. She is my DD not a borrowing neighbor. LOL

Does anyone have the models with the huge water tanks, how are those?

Weezy Rider 10-30-2016 04:48 AM

I can only remember checking one out at a Pfaff dealer years ago. Pfaff decided to sell gravity feed irons and an ironing board with a fan and heat. Apparently they didn't sell too well, I got the board free a couple of years ago. Fan and heat still work. The iron is lighter than the Steam Generator but you need to hang it and then you have a hose connected, too.

Allbrands sells Reliable and other gravity feed irons. Check their pages, some do have reviews. Here's a link to a Consew and there are some reviews at the bottom of the page:

I have the Maven. The tank holds 3.5 cups of water! Separate switches for dry vs steam. It does not have an auto shut off either. $199.00. Gets HOT!

Best iron I have ever had

EmiliasNana 10-31-2016 05:02 AM

I loved my Reliable iron but it only lasted three years. It never leaked (used distilled as we have a high amount of iron in our well water) or spit, and I could over ride the auto shut off. Maybe that's why it only lasted 3 yrs! It was on constantly for that length of time. I won't buy another however............went back to my Black and Decker Digital.

I have the Digital Velocity iron and have had no usual problems with it. I think it is about 8-9 years old now. The only thing is my rough hands have abraded the rubberish coating on the handle. It flakes some but not a problem. I love the iron and it is the best one I have ever had. I have found filters without a problem but not in a while. I would replace it with another when it is time.

jcrow 10-31-2016 09:17 AM

I have the Realible Velocity but don't know anything about filters. Am I suppose to put filters in it? It's the orange iron.

Weezy Rider 10-31-2016 02:21 PM

I had a Velocity 100. On the back of the iron below the plug:
http://www.vacuum-direct.com/reliabl...home-iron.aspx

That was the filter. Couldn't find any more

You had the V50:

From this ad, it doesn't look like it has a filter from the description.

I got my filters from Amazon Velocity filters

I have a Reliable iron and I love it. It is a Velocity Digital. I have had 2 Rowentas and will never buy another one. The Reliable is heavy but I like that. Mine has never leaked. I use distilled water in it and I dump it out after each use. I have not had to replace a filter yet. I use it to press large pieces and use a smaller iron to do seams when I piece.

love2sew8085 10-31-2016 11:43 PM

My Reliable is by far the best iron I've ever owned. I figure it's worth the price as you don't have to keep replacing your cheap iron every few months. I also iron clothes and it makes quick work out of that with all the steam!

By the time I looked, only one third party seller on Amazon had any. I know who she is and she is reputable, but she could only have a finite source.

Allbrands had none, and Reliable had none on their site either. None of the other sites who sold Reliable irons had any.

germanquilter 11-01-2016 05:02 AM

Interesting thread. I am in the market for a new iron and it will not be an Oliso! My Oliso stopped heating and it was less than 18 months old. I loved the steam it produced so I will look into Reliable irons.

rj.neihart 11-01-2016 05:27 AM

I've had a variety of irons. Even those from the dollar store work great - all depends on your taste.

Quilty-Louise 11-01-2016 06:23 AM

Have you tried the Reliable website?

I just looked and found the filters there also.

I've had the same Reliable iron for years, and wouldn't have anything else. Period. In all those years, it has never, EVER spit water, and steams for freakin' ever!

They weren't there when I was in the market for them. I put the iron in the Goodwill. If they are there now, it's because of complaints about having an iron you can't care for. I thought at the time it was rather dumb of Reliable NOT to support the Velocity.

That Velocity is 2 1/2 years gone, and the Oliso is going.

craftEcowgirl 11-05-2016 10:44 AM

Just bought my first larger iron, Panasonic cordless, I hate cords!

okie2tx 11-11-2016 11:26 AM

My Reliable Velocity 200 doesn't use a filter that I can find. I've gone through all of the manual and it doesn't show one. I always use distilled water and I love this iron!
