removing frixion pen
 

I taught a free motion class, a student brought a small quilt to ask, How do you remove a frixion pen mark on a quilt? It has been ironed off, was stored in a room that got cold, now some of the marks returned. It does not iron off, it has been washed a couple times and still has not come out.

She was told by another teacher that it won't come back even when it gets cold...because she tried it and put it in the freezer and hers didn't come back.

I feel bad for her, it would be upsetting to me too.

I used it once years ago on dark, solid fabric. It left a white mark after ironing it off. So I don't use it. I also heard horror stories of quilters using it, sending it to a show. It got cold during shipment and the marks returned. But I haven't heard what is the best way to remove the marks when they returned.

I don't know of a solution but I recently read an article by Julie Cefalu of The Crafty Quilter and she experimented with those pens and had a hard time getting some of them out of the fabric. Now I'm more cautious using them.

All I can say is do Not use frixon pens. They do not disappear and keep coming back. At least that's my experience and only used it once

yes, they are not meant for fabric so i've stayed away from those. hope it works out.

I remember when those pens first came out, I cautioned against using them and was flamed and ridiculed. They were not acid-free and not designed for use on fabric, and it really bothers me that a lot of quilt shops sell them as if they are.

Hope your student finds a way to successfully remove the marks.

I use them to mark fabric that will be cut on the line or left in the seam. That doesn't bother me. I wouldn't use them to mark a quilt top. Someone posted that baking soda would remove the lines but I haven't tried it.

I had the same problem with Frixion pen ink "ghosting" on fabrics and the only thing I found that completely removed the ink is Amodex. You can find in the grocery store where the other stain removers are. I don't use those pens anymore.

Luckily I heard the warnings before I ever thought about using a Frixion pen. I have been sticking to white chalk or blue water soluble pens.
