replacement power cord stops working at the slightest touch...
 

Long story short...I lost the power cord to my Innovis 1500D when I moved, about a year ago. I bought a replacement online. The replacement fit, but did not have the secure, "snugly attached" feeling that the original did. It worked, as long as nothing touched the cord. Eventually, I taped it to my sewing table. But last night I had to move the machine a few inches to one side and untaped the cord to do it. And now the power stops at the slightest breeze, even though I re-taped it to the table.

It looks connected, but clearly the flow of electricity inside the cord, where it connects to the machine, is not making it across the gap. Isn't there some sort of conductive grease that could be inserted into the connection? To fill the gap?

And one more question...could all this power on/power off/power on activity damage my machine?

have you contacted the vendor for a replacement... it sounds defective to me

I asked my techie dh who understands electricals about this. He told me a couple of things.

First, he said to hold the plug in place and jiggle the cord. If the power goes on/off then there is a broken wire inside the cord and there is pretty much nothing you can do.

If the problem is with the plug, he said if it is not a molded plug it might be fixable. If it is a molded plug (which I believe most of our machines have), someone with electrical knowledge could cut off the plug and replace it. However, usually those plugs are molded specifically to a machine (and therefore are not generic), so you probably won't be able to find a replacement plug anyway.

Did you buy the replacement from a dealer? Or off eBay or Amazon? There are so many knock-offs these days, it's best to buy only from a reputable dealer.

Anyway, the upshot of what my dh said (and I confess I did not understand all of it) is that you probably need to buy a new cord.

Edit: I asked about the grease, and he said never to do something like that. He also said it is hard on the machine to have the power flicker on and off like that.

OK, no conductive grease! Thank your husband for me! I bought the replacement from Sewing Parts Online. I cant remember now if they described it as a Brother part, or if it was a generic. I could buy another from them, but I am concerned that I will have the same problem. I have sent them an e-mail asking for information, so I may be getting some answers there.

In the meantime, I will start looking around for a dealer. And I will leave the machine off and stop fiddling with it until I have a new cord from somewhere.
