Replacing Backing on a Finished Quilt

Is there an easier way to replace the backing on a quilt other than removing all of the binding and removing all of the quilting and basically starting all over again?

If this was just a utility quilt - one that's used for picnics or the kids drag around or we curl up with it on the couch but don't need anything fancy - I'd consider laying it on a new backing and tying it instead of quilting. Since you've already quilted it, you don't need to worry about how close together the ties are and could just do enough to keep the backing smooth. Then, I'd fold the backing to the front for the binding right over the top of the original binding. But if this is a quilt you want to preserve in it's original state, you'd be better off removing the quilting and binding and starting over again. Or, just remove the original binding, add a new back over the old, do minimal stitch in the ditch and add a new binding. Good luck.

I think Pam has given you your best options.

Your only other option I can see is only viable if you just need to patch a couple of worn areas then I would make patches and hand sew them on the back. The you can mimic the quilting to keep it as original as possible.

If the batting is intact, you could add new backing and just SITD between the blocks to hold the new backing flat. Either remove the old binding and replace it with new or bring extra backing to the front for an old fashioned finished edge.

Thank you. All of your suggestions are excellent. I may even be able to do a combination of suggestions.

Wish you had posted a photo of the quilt.

Not terribly computer creative to be able to do that.
