This is the continuation of my restoration project to share with all of you, the pictures of the “Puzzle” Box dated February 19, 1889 and its contents. I relined the interior with new velvet and cleaned all of the attachments with liquid silver cleaner.

Beautiful... You did such a nice job with taking care of it!

jeaninmaine 07-06-2011 04:47 PM

I wonder if there's a website that explains what all the attachments are and what they were used for.

I never thought of silver cleaner. That was a great idea, your attachments look great.

Nanamoms 07-06-2011 05:07 PM

Sparkly!!

The old Singer books have explanations for the attachments. If you don't have one, I'm sure someone here will have a copy or you can look on Singer's site.

I also never thought of silver cleaner. I'm getting some!

I have one of these but it is jumbled with the attatchments. I never realized there was a date stamped on the box so I grabbed a magnifying glass and it says 1889. I do have the rolled hemmers in the same order as pictured but that is all. I wonder what was supposed to be on the numbered spokes in the upper left. My "spokes" are in the upper right and the lining is the original brownish velvet.

Beautiful restoration.

A very sympathetic restoration. You have done such a great job with this. The puzzle box is fantastic, until recently I had never seen one.

The Singer 27 Machine Manual can be down loaded from the internet in the PDF format that document explains the attachment usage.

Piney, thank you so very, very much for the url. I've been so busy lately trying to get moved that I haven't had a chance to look them up.

roseOfsharon 07-07-2011 08:54 AM

Lovely machine and the puzzle box looks like new :)

Please tell me, how did you pull the nails up out of the clasp pieces without damaging them (to get the liner underneath) and the bobbin holder tacs?

happyquiltmom 11-11-2013 03:33 AM

Beautiful job! I've been wanting one of these boxes to go with my treadle machine for a long time. As a side note, I believe that the 1889 date on the boxes is the patent date...not the actual year of manufacture.

lakekids 11-11-2013 05:53 AM

I found a website that has instructions/pictures of 3 different styles of puzzle boxes and their attachments.
