Return Accufeed foot to the shop?
 

I purchased a Janome 6600 earlier this year and I like it, but I'm having trouble with it not sewing easily over seams and wanting to kick the fabric over to the left as I get to the end of a seam. Did a little reading & decided the special accufeed quarter inch foot would solve my problems. So, I called the local shop. They were having a sale and offerred to hold the foot for me and still give me the 20% discount this week even though the sale would be over. Well, I picked it up this morning and tried it, and I hate it. It's big & clunky and wobbly and there's no way I'll ever use it. Would it be tacky of me to return it, or try to? Really, I might as well have thrown the money out the window. This was the first time I've been to this shop & the ladies who work there were very nice & I'd hate to spoil my relationship with them. So should I write it off as a mistake, or return it? Thanks!

I'd return it and tell them why I didn't like it, maybe exchange it for something else you could use???

I'm sorry you don't like the foot....I use mine all the time for piecing (have to position the needle at 53 and shorten stitch length to 25).....I don't understand how it can be wobbly?....is the screw tightened enough?.....did you bring the accufeed foot down into position?.....don't mean to sound like you don't know what you are doing, just mistakes that I have made before....if you really don't like it, I would try to take it back as they are pretty expensive to just sit in your tool drawer.

I agree with Buckeye ... I use mine almost exclusively for piecing (paper piecing being an exception). It shouldn't be wobbly and I too wonder if A) the foot is a lemon, B) the screw is not tight or C) the "accufeed" gizmo is not in position under the foot.

Maybe if it is not too much trouble, take your machine in with you and show them the problems you are having with the foot.

I think deanneellen has the right idea. I would call before I go so you can be sure to talk to the right person.

I have the 7700 and use the accufeed 1/4" to piece all the time. It works great -- it does not wobble, but works fine. I agree it is big and clunky but I have had no complaints about how it workd. I too wonder if the foot is defective, or has some other problem.

Thanks everyone, for your suggestions. I checked the things you mentioned. The accufeed was engaged and the screw was tight. If I hold the foot by the "ankle" the foot itself will wobble side to side where the hinges are. Hope that makes sense. Maybe that's normal. I know it has to move up & down to go over seams & such, but side to side? Maybe I'll try it again tomorrow. If y'all like it so much, maybe I'm the problem. I do think the straight stitch plate that came with it is good.

I also use it all the time, it went over an intersection of 6 seams on my OBW easily without veering off. If possible I would take the whole machine in and show them the problems you are having as it should work fine. It is big and bulky but so is everyother type of walking foot I have ever seen.
I have bought the open toed accufeed foot for paper piecing as well, as I love how evenly they feed the fabric.

Mine does not wobble side to side at all, so I think you may have gotten a lemon. I'd bring it back to the shop and explain what's going on and ask them to try it on their machine. That way you'll be able to see if you're doing something wrong or if it's the foot. But I get no wobble side to side.
