Good Morning, Everyone, and Happy New Year!
I thought my goal was to finish the memory quilt for my parents (I still will) and to start using up my stash. Surprise awaited me - my elder daughter called and asked me to start making a wedding gown! So that means a wedding quilt, also. (She has talked about a double wedding ring quilt for several years.) Whoa! What a change to the plans!   Mom doesn't know everything, I guess! |
WOO HOO CONGRATS ! And now the fun begins Have they set a date ? More details , please
|
Nodate set yet, but there have been whisperings about Memorial Day 2011...
As to the dress, she already picked out patterns that she wants me to work with, and specified beading and embroidery... Off we go! |
Wedding dresses are such a joy to make! I made one for my daughter years ago.
|
I hope you can coach me through a little of this! I haven't made anything more difficult than a prom dress so far.
I'm looking forward to the task. :-D |
Congratulations!!
What a way to start the new year!! I know we will all be looking forward to seeing pictures of these projects, as they get going. What Fun!! :D :D :D :D |
How exciting - A Wedding :-)
I have watched a friend do her daughters gown (she even hand beaded it) It was beautiful. I am not sure I would have the patience but best of luck (you will post a follow up when you have completed it - right??) |
Oh wow. You will be busy, but what a wonderful change of plans. :)

I made my gown 31 years ago for my wedding. One suggestion is tohave your daughter try on some ready made gowns.. What she thinks she likes and what may look good could be two different things. This could save alot of expense and tears if she isn't happy with the gown. (she may not be happy with the style not your sewing) I know I tried on different gowns and liked parts from differeent ones. I ended up piecing 3 patterns together. course that was 31 years ago and styles were way different. good luck.

One of the best pieces of advice I received when making my daughter's wedding dress was to make a mock up of muslin or similar cheap fabric and employ a seam ripper when done. It was the best advice ever since my daughter is on the heavier side and I was using a pattern several sizes smaller and adjusting it! It turned out beautiful though because I could use the mock up as a pattern to get an exact fit. Her wedding quilt is in the background.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions, and for sharing photos! Good encouragement for the trembling mom  I will post pictures as I go - or at least when I finish ;)

A suggestion for your daughter's wedding quilt: go to http://www.quiltworx.com (Judy Niemeyer's website) and scroll through the patterns until you come to "A Garden for My Wedding Ring". It is a paper pieced double wedding ring pattern with applique. My sister made this quilt for her daughter's wedding and it turned out so beautiful! It can take a while to make, but the effort is truly worth it!
I will try to post the photo from the website so you can see what I'm talking about. I wish I had a photo of my niece's quilt, but I don't. Judy Niemeyer's A Garden for my Wedding Ring quilt |
Beautiful pattern, Nelle. I'll look into that. Thanks.
