Anyone heard of Riccar Sewing Machines? Are they any good?

A lot depends on your price range. In general, though, I believe the Riccar is not considered one of the better lower-end machines. A lot of people prefer to go with Kenmore or Janome.

My daughter has my mother's 1964 model Riccar, and it still sews like a dream. She wouldn't trade it for anything. She has a Janome and has had nothing but trouble with it. It's been in the shop more than it's been at home. Personally, I love my Brother.

Never heard of them here in the UK

They are a very good machine. I still have one but one of my grandsons got a hold of it and lost a important part to it. Mine sewed jeans and other heavy fabrics. I brought a heavy duty singer and I don't like it at all. It has metal, but more plastic. Cheap made and it has to be adjusted every little bit.

I have one! :-)

It's about fifty years old, I was given it many years ago, and it still sews like a dream. My eldest is starting to show an interest in sewing, so I'll be setting her up on that.

There may be a huge difference in quality between old and newer machines by the same manufacturer. Most of the old sewing machines were excellent no matter what the brand. Newer machines vary wildly in quality from one name to the other, and also can vary greatly in quality within a manufacturer's line.

It's probably best to post the actual model number of a machine to get accurate feedback; otherwise people may be commenting pro and con on machines that were made 50 years apart from each other, or on machines that have a $1,000+ price differential.

If you have to ask if anyone has heard of a certain brand of machine, I think I would stay away from it............Old Riccar machines were good, but I don't believe that parts are available for them anymore...I am not positive, but, I don't think they are in business anymore....

Riccar is still in business, but I am not sure they do sewing machines anymore, they do however make great vaccum cleaners.
