Rick rack looks really cute as a trim when sewn into a seam where only half of it is showing. But I agree with most if the posts here. I remember it from the 60's...yuck.

sharin'Sharon 09-18-2011 07:32 AM

Just this weekend on a Martha Pullen show, they made flowers and leaves out of rick rack. It required a little handwork. You may find it on marthapullen.com.

I love rick rack. Didn't used to like it all that much, but I think it has regained it's popularity. I made this quilt last spring after I saw it in a magazine. I think the huge rick rack adds just the right touch.

jaciqltznok 09-18-2011 08:22 AM

nope, I love it!

Dianne1 09-18-2011 08:22 AM

Darling! That's what I was taking about!

Girls. I found Rick rack at BBCrafts on line for $2.25 a 25 ft roll so if you order a few the shipping is still the same. Sure beats almost two bucks for. Two and a half yd pig.

I'd love to see a pic of this baby quilt if you have one, please. Sounds like a wonderful idea!

I like rick rack. I do not like clowns.

Ellie'sNana 09-18-2011 09:30 AM

I'm with you. I couldn't tell you exactly why, but I am not a fan of rick rack at all.

Maybe it's because it was in a clown costume my mom made me when I was younger. Whenever I see or hear about rick rack, I only think of clowns!

I recently came across patterns for making rick rack flowers. Used lg. & sm. rickrack & even layered the sizes in some cases.

serenitybygrace 09-18-2011 10:27 AM

Nothing wrong with rickrack if used in whatever. I don't happen to like it overdone but 'overdone' is a personal judgement.

nellie 09-18-2011 10:40 AM

im a fan of rick rack makkes wonderful trims

I have several pairs of earrings like this that my grandmother made. ( I've never seen such tiny, dainty rick rack before.) My mother entered them in some sort of contest prior to her own death and won several ribbons with them. I've kept them because I'm sentimental about them but I keep wondering what I should really DO with them. I don't wear jewelry.

I love it especially the larger rick rack like in this quilt I did for a friend's new granddaughter

Homemother 09-18-2011 11:14 AM

I try really really really hard to like rick rack. I guess it didn't have good memories for me. It's sort of like the 70s fabrics - they were ugly then and this time around they are better, but still kind of ugly. I like the way the "new" 70s fabrics are designed, but would not use them myself. Same with rick rack. Sometimes I really like the way it is used, but it's still unappealing to my senses and I don't use rick rack at all.

quiltmom04 09-18-2011 11:46 AM

I think of those dreadful home ec dresses!

Bev 09-18-2011 12:10 PM

I have put the dainty baby rickrack on my little granddaughter's dresses that I've made for her. Just a touch and it looks so sweet. I also make clothes for my 8 yr. old granddaughter's American Girl doll, Molly. I believe she's supposed to be from the forties. I use the tiny rickrack on her sundresses and bathing suits.
Other than that, I like it in standard sizes on aprons. I also made a Mary Englebreit crazy quilt and used rickrack on a number of the blocks. It seemed to fit right in with her fabrics. I think rickrack has its place on a certain type of things, very homey and cute stuff. 8-)

mucky 09-18-2011 12:15 PM

I've seen it used nicely on quilts.

mades 09-18-2011 12:29 PM

I used some large black rickrack as a border around a photo for a granddaughter and her family to make a pillow for her other grandmother. The rickrack was half under the picture cut into a circle so it looked like a scallop. That was my Christmas for pillow tops!

bearisgray 09-18-2011 12:30 PM

I remember trying to iron the stuff and trying to keep both the zigs and zags nice.

Annaquilts 09-18-2011 12:32 PM

I love it for certain quilts or clothing for children.

MargeD 09-18-2011 01:08 PM

I remember making gingham aprons in high school to sell at our church bazaar with embroidery around the rick rack. I guess I love it because I love making Raggedy Ann dolls, and you can't do Raggedy Ann without rick rack on her apron. Just personal preference.

wraez 09-18-2011 01:23 PM

I'm not a fan either. I have some that a friend gave me and I on rare occasions use it when making fabric postcards.

jansquiltn 09-18-2011 01:26 PM

I remember an adorable dress that mom made that had lively colors and rick rack. I loved it. It was my party dress

I made some old fashioned aprons a couple of years ago and used lots of it because I remember both of my "Memere's" (grandmothers) wearing the same kind of aprons and thay had ric rac. I also use it on doll clothes.

sistermadge 09-18-2011 03:37 PM

Guess it's all in how you look at things and personal taste. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, rick rack . . . on some things! I am crazy about polka dots too . . . on some things! If it says "use me here" loud and clear . . . go for it. It's your creation . . . really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Sure don't mean this to sound discounting to others opinions or trite . . . but all these beautiful quilts we see on here tell me that we are ALL different in many ways, but thankfully all alike in our love of this art form.

wartime jane 09-18-2011 03:44 PM

I hated it as a kid. Come to think of it, I had a clown doll covered in rick rack! He was creepy.

Now, I like it just fine. Especially the enormous rick rack. It's the meanest, freakiest, most aggressive rick rack of all. Have you seen it? It's so wrong that it's right.

megs0863 09-18-2011 03:44 PM

Love rick rack on aprons and little girl dresses/skirts. Two different colors do look terrific.

To MargeD: Our home Ec. class must have shared the same curriculum because I still have my red/white gingham apron with my name hand embroidered on the bib and rick rack around the two pockets. You should have seen how horrible my stitches were back then. I made it on a featherweight and my stitch lengths were all over the place. How it all began...

Wanabee Quiltin 09-18-2011 04:06 PM

I love rick rack, but it's my generation. Or maybe my Mom's.

Drew 09-18-2011 04:09 PM

Love rick rack!! Use it to lengthen my DGD's pants, quilt blocks, bibs, towels, etc.

Quiltinelaine 09-18-2011 04:19 PM

No wonder my DIL looked at me funny - when I wanted to put ric rack on a doll on a quilt::: She said that it was a little old fashioned but I still like it and did it anyway:::Does remind me of home and I think your right Wanabee - must be the generation!!!!

My Grandmother did this and edged pillowcases. I love rick rack -- it gives me a warm feeling when I see it trimming something.

It depends how it is used. Made some skirts for my granddaughters and it was darling on there. Certain patterns it can really embellish, just depends.

Dee 09-18-2011 06:49 PM

Love ric rac. Makes me fell warm and cozy.

Ziggysmom 09-18-2011 08:35 PM

When I see rick rack I think of the Lanz dressed that were popular in the early 60's. I couldn't afford one, but found a similar floral stripe fabric, trimmed it with white rick rack and made my own. Friends thought it was the real thing. Ü
