And there was the time I was helping my older DD do some counted cross stitch. I had designed a pillow top for her, sent her the thread I thought she'd need and directions.

"Using 3 strands of floss">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So, she calls me. Why is it so hard to pull the thread thru the aida cloth? And besides, I'm out of thread.

You can't be!

So, in true, absent instructor fashion-------------she was using 3 pieces of 6 strand floss. 18 strands! No wonder she couldn't pull it thru the cloth.

So, what seems simple to the teller, may not be so simple to the doer!

Very funny story.

Question-------------what are you going to do when you try a rag quilt?

If you're Catholic, right is the hand you make the sign of a cross with. Waaaaaaaaay back when, a friend of mine followed directions this way. Don't know when a guy makes the sign of the cross if he's looking to turn or praying for safety!

Kitsie 10-13-2011 09:38 AM

Oh, I love it!! You poor thing!

magnolia 10-13-2011 10:21 AM

If I thought of it as the pretty side that would have made sense. Also, with batiks or fabrics where I can't tell the difference I just figure there is no 'wrong side'.

I'm laughing because I would have done the exact same thing your daughter did!

This story made me chuckle. I made a small country-inspired wall quilt with a moose and tree against a blue sky (which had tiny dots that looked like stars). Only after I put it together did I realize that I used the "wrong" side of the blue sky fabric. So far, no one noticed. But if I do, I am just going to tell them that the sky was smokey from some near by forest fires! LOL!

valsma 10-13-2011 10:27 AM

That is to funny. I'm glad im not the only one who has silly questions like that. Glad you had someone who could help you figure it out.

Deborahlees 10-13-2011 10:33 AM

I can remember as a vey young child, fixing dinner and trying to find directions on a can of green beans on how to heat them up.....life is a learning curve....thank goodness for that....and once grand kids come along, you start all over again !!!

Kitsie 10-13-2011 11:01 AM

sometimes I have purposefully used the "wrong" side of the fabric when I need a more subtle look or when a paler version of one fabric is not to be had. Works great!

Thanks for sharing....

Thanks for the giggle.

helou 10-14-2011 04:07 AM

Too cute! Thank you for being humble enough about it now and daring telling us. You just might help somebody who has the same question. Who knows. Too funny!

Charleen DiSante 10-14-2011 04:09 AM

What a great story and to be able to tell it 'on yourself' today means you have a sense of humor about it now. I guess it's like any hobby or occupation, you come across terms that can't be explained except by that expert who knows. Thanks for sharing, love stories like this.

stoppain 10-14-2011 04:09 AM

you have given me a big smile this morning thanks
I'm on the right side now, giving me a good day

joycecil 10-14-2011 04:14 AM

Started my day off right. I can see me doing that. Good that you had someone to help.

jbud2 10-14-2011 04:14 AM

my granddaughter was 'helping' me to some piecing yesterday. I had to explain the right and wrong side thing to her and she got it. But I couldn't get her to line up the corners so I could just shoot the squares into the sewing machine! She had fun matching prints and colors. (4yrs old)

Steady Stiching 10-14-2011 04:40 AM

LOL

lusews71 10-14-2011 05:03 AM

Grannyh67 10-14-2011 05:33 AM

That is so funny, that is something I would probably have done too. I can just see Her laughing now, LOL.

Landers 10-14-2011 05:34 AM

too funny!

sandpat 10-14-2011 05:35 AM

LOL....not laughing AT you though, have enough of my own stories to do that! This is just cute funny!

jaciqltznok 10-14-2011 05:36 AM

I absolutely LOVE this story...and it brings to home the fact that so many people jump on the "I am a quilter" band wagon that have NO clue about the facst/rules of working with fabric!
AND those of us that have been working with fabric/sewing, crafting, etc for many years, often forget that some are total virgins/newbies when they take their first quilt class...

I firmly believe that ALL beginner quilting classes should not be about making a quilt at all..but instead about learning the machine, learning about the different fabric, learning to read patterns, learning about threads, needles, etc...and then, when the FACTS/rules are explained, and one firmly understands them, they can proceed with making a quilt...for then they will truly understand what it means to make a QUILT and not just sew up a blanket!

Pink Dogwood 10-14-2011 05:39 AM

Love your story. Can't remember when I learned right and wrong sides since I have been sewing for almost 60 yrs. I suspect one of my 4H leaders taught me. I still have a problem with the wording on some patterns until the light bulb goes on!!! LOL

maryp 10-14-2011 05:46 AM

u never know unless u ask. cute storygot a chuckle out of it

Homespun 10-14-2011 06:01 AM

Funny...

quiltaroni 10-14-2011 06:03 AM

I chuckled but I can relate. My first effort had every seam pressed open!!!1

lillybeck 10-14-2011 06:11 AM

Great story.

Sunnye 10-14-2011 06:15 AM

I'm still trying to figure out if there's a right and wrong side of an all black fabric!

mimee4 10-14-2011 06:23 AM

This is hilarious!!! Never thought how crazy "right side of fabric" would be to someone who didn't know. You made my day!!

Funny Story, I just realized in four quilting classes we have never covered how to hand sew the binding down. I had to take a guess at that one.

Rose Bagwell 10-14-2011 06:46 AM

Nice Story, yes we all start our that way, I am still learning at my age. I guess the best way is to start with a class, but even then you don't learn everthing. I have mostly learned by trial and error.

Rose Bagwell 10-14-2011 06:48 AM

Glad I am not the only one that does not understand all those initials/letters, thanks I feel better. I don't do text, so I am sometimes dumbfounded.

Quilt Mom 10-14-2011 06:58 AM

Thanks you for adding a little humor to my day!

I learned 'right' from 'wrong' many years ago. But boy was I surprised when I learned that some quilters intentionally turn fabric the 'wrong' side up for use in their quilts to get a muted version of the color, thus twice as much variety in their stash!

BobbiG 10-14-2011 07:02 AM

Love your story.

Grambi 10-14-2011 07:12 AM

Thanks for that--I was really in the need for a laugh this morning. Maybe there is hope for today afterall.

collady 10-14-2011 07:55 AM

How wonderful! It is a great story to share, and laughter is such a wonderful gift to give!
