Ripping out.....

As I was (again) ripping out some stitches I began to wonder.....Has anyone ever made a complete quilt without ripping something out? I have reached a point that when I sit down to work, the first thing I pull out of the drawer is my seam ripper. I am a fairly new quilter (but have sewed since very young) so I know I will get better. Maybe..Just wondered...........

KentuckyWoman 02-17-2012 10:17 AM

seems that no matter what I'm sewing, I'm ripping something out. Yes, I'm OCD about it... I want it right:thumbup:.. But please don't send the quilt police just yet! 'cause my points just aren't there yet! :D

Linnie 02-17-2012 10:20 AM

Always ripping!!!

VickyS 02-17-2012 10:21 AM

Same here! My ripper is almost a part of my hand by the time I finish a top!

AnnieH 02-17-2012 10:37 AM

I had a Guild day today and ripped three of four times but ended up with three good blocks (new pattern to me).

pamelainsa 02-17-2012 10:39 AM

Oh yes!!! I have just put a border on three times!!! Started to think that I had 'lost' it!!!

MaryMo 02-17-2012 10:41 AM

I can't believe that sometimes I rip out a seam just to sew it back the same way, so I have to rip it again. ARGHHHHH! I'm like you .... my goal is to someday quilt with ripping out .... maybe.

pinkberrykay 02-17-2012 10:45 AM

everytime...:D

QuiltnNan 02-17-2012 10:50 AM

i've managed one or two without unsewing... not a good record since i've made so very many quilts :)

Cagey 02-17-2012 11:04 AM

I've added to my collection of rippers so many times its embarrassing. Sometimes I get my stiletto and ripper mixed up - that's interesting!

Don't I wish! Sometimes I make it far into the project and that little arrogant devil jumps on my shoulder and starts to brag "Oh look, everything is going just perfectly" and the next piece goes on upside down, or wrong sides together, or.....and out comes the frog - ripit

BellaBoo 02-17-2012 11:23 AM

Some of my projects I keep going and let the mistakes be part of the charm. This drives some of my guild members crazy but the beginners will see it and not be intimidated to show their work.

Sunnie 02-17-2012 11:52 AM

I thought it was a regular part of the process of piecing. :o

Jackie Spencer 02-17-2012 02:31 PM

My seam ripper is my best friend!! I have 3 or 4.

JabezRose 02-17-2012 02:39 PM

Rip, riiiiiiiiip, rip, they call me the ripper!

dunster 02-17-2012 02:42 PM

I've worn out more than that! Last time I bought 6 so I could get a discount. They're always disappearing, breaking, or not where I need them.

gigi712 02-17-2012 02:44 PM

I'm a ripper, too. Have gotten pretty good at it, too.

barny 02-17-2012 02:47 PM

PinkberryKay, did you get your quilt layed out good?

Lori S 02-17-2012 03:54 PM

You know I was wondering the same thing the other day. I thought I might have actually had completed a top without ever taking out a single stitch..... and then it happened.... and my thoughts of having one done with out a rip ... were dashed.
I think never having to rip a stitch is an urban quilting myth.

Sandra in Minnesota 02-17-2012 04:20 PM

That's me......rip, rip, rip.

noahscats7 02-17-2012 04:42 PM

you've got to be joking!!!!!!!!!

EllieGirl 02-17-2012 05:50 PM

Oh my gosh!! I'm making my first log cabin and had the pieces in the wrong places. So today I was ripping and ripping wondering what is wrong with me, and my math calculations that I have to rip all the time. I am so glad to know other people have the same problems.

mighty 02-17-2012 06:12 PM

I am always ripping something out!!!!!

Val in IN 02-17-2012 08:19 PM

I've never made anything that didn't get the ripper treatment. I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have to "un-sew" something!!:D

JudyTheSewer 02-17-2012 08:20 PM

sewing.....unsewing.......all part of piecing a top for me!

coldquilter 02-17-2012 08:24 PM

My record isn't really good. I am always un-sewing. I am really good at it though so that is good.

I don't fear ripping. In fact sometimes it's quite calming. Just sitting and ripping!!!!!!!!!!! It's like knitting----------Even after 50+ years of knitting, I don't ever expect to not rip out something.

omaluvs2quilt 02-18-2012 09:46 AM

You are too funny...Nope, not me either!

Grandma Peg 02-18-2012 10:23 AM

Think we all have days that we do nothing but rip. It really is sad when you make the same mistake one and maybe even the second time - that is so frustrating.

annesthreads 02-18-2012 11:27 AM

I reckon I make every quilt twice by the time I've redone all my mistakes...

suzeq45 02-18-2012 11:56 AM

Oh my yes, everyday I seem to rip out so mistake, some times I also feel like I'm losing it too. :o You are not alone!!

SharonTheriault 02-18-2012 12:58 PM

My ripper is always handy. Need to use it often. Like Mary Mo, I have re-sewn the seam the same way and have to rip it out again. The one that happens most often is putting the right side to the wrong side of the fabric. I would scream but husband is sleeping. lol

katz_n_kwiltz 02-18-2012 01:04 PM

Sharon,
yes, even with my long arm there are spots I dont like, I have rippers everywhere, I like the teeny ones,
I can hold them well, I dont like the Fons n Porter one, its too heavy for me, and I seem to drop it all the time.
I rip as good (if not better) as i sew.
katz

kaydeej 02-18-2012 02:18 PM

I've just taken up quilting and ripping reminds me of a knitting term. I don't rip out, I frog. Rippit rippit rippit, lol.I'm beginning to wonder if I am going to have to put some fabric tape on my seams they have been frogged so much,

Stitchnripper 02-18-2012 02:25 PM

Not yet!! Which is why I call myself stitchnripper!!

GingerK 02-18-2012 03:27 PM

Ummm......Nooooo.......and anyone who says they have, either made a very small or very sloppy quilt, or have very poor memories.

Arleners 02-20-2012 06:59 AM

I teach a beginner's quilter class and on the first night I show them the various seam ripper options out there and make them say - "A seam ripper is my best friend"
