Road Trip!!!! map at post 17

What a great time we had yesterday. Three friends take their machines to be serviced in Penn Yan NY, Amish country. We had to leave home at 6am and didn't get back until 6pm... exhausting. The repair shop gives out maps of all the quilt related shops in the area. So after having breakfast, we visited 4 shops, then lunch and a couple of more shops. The shops were so varied... one delightful lady owns The Quilt Room and sells mostly finished quilts and items. She let us know that she also offers lunches to groups in her home to enjoy a meal and talk quilts... what a fun idea. Our guilds are thinking of inviting her to come speak to us as she is rather a 'colors' expert. Another shop we visited is mainly a fabric store, but also sells finished clothing related items like hats, bonnets, suspenders, baby outfits. She had a clearance rack of quality fabrics on clearance - $4/yard. [the other ladies were remarking of the prince increase from $3/yard LOL]. Another shop was really a general store with a huge fabric section... excellent prices there and browsing the unusual general items. Another shop was new and was located in an old barn with the date of 1879 on it. And we barely had spare room, but picked up very inexpensive pumpkins and squashes at a roadside stand on the way home. The weather could not have been more perfect and even got a glimpse of the fall leaves just turning on the trees.

Sounds like a great time was had by all! I'm leaving for a 3 day quilt retreat in a couple of hours. I'm sure we'll have as much fun as it sounds like you all did.

Sounds like a wonderful trip! A good friend and I go on a quilt trip about once a year and have such a good time.

Homespun 09-26-2014 05:52 AM

Sounds great!

You hit two of my favorites. Ada's Golden Lane and Edgewood. I make an annual pilgrimage to both.

calla 09-26-2014 06:13 AM

How fun did you purchase?

Terry in the ADK 09-26-2014 06:29 AM

We love our trips there and usually our DH drive us so we can hand sew on the way. Sometimes we drop them off at the Curtis museum in Hammondsport and then we go off to the shops meeting up for lunch and or dinner. A great day. Don't forget to stop at Oak Hill bulk food store!

Fall in Western NY!!! It only get better when you combine quilt related activity! What a day.

quiltingeileen 09-26-2014 06:49 AM

Sounds delightful!

I will be going to some of those same places tomorrow. Only about 40 minutes from where I live. If you can, try to go on a Saturday sometime and visit the Windmill. Crafts, produce, Amish baked goods and furniture and just about everything else you can imagine. It would make for another fun day.

Anniedeb 09-26-2014 11:04 PM

Sounds like you had such fun! Must be something in the air. My friend came in from Houston, and we hit 4 quilts shops, a Joann's and a Hancock's. 6 hours, 150 miles, and almost circled the Twin Cities! Will definitely return to a couple of them. Loved the one on the opposite end of town!! Bought a ruler, some patterns, and some great fabric!

What a wonderful adventure! I joined a couple of friends and we did some shop hopping during Row by Row. We had a grand time and went to some familiar shops and also some new ones. I love how each shop has its own personality and I find things there that I can't find anywhere else.

For those of you who haven't spent a day like this I heartily recommend it. You don't even have to buy anything to have a lot of fun.

peaceandjoy 09-27-2014 03:40 AM

You were in my back yard! The Mennonite shops are basic, but you can't beat their prices, whether it's for fabric or for produce. Glad you had a fun day.

zennia 09-27-2014 04:12 AM

QuiltnNan, it sounds like you had a great time. I am going that way in a few weeks . Can I pm you for info. on just where they are etc.? sounds like a fun side trip while we are traveling.

LeRoy at Penn Yan Sewing told us it was OK to copy and share the map he gave us, so I made a .pdf of it

Weaver View Farms is new and does not have a huge inventory. And you have to go upstairs in the barn to see the quilts.

Sounds like a wonderful day

SouthPStitches 09-27-2014 05:32 AM

It doesn't get much better than a day shared with friends, fabric, food and foliage. What a great day you spent.

trolleystation 09-27-2014 05:45 AM

My quilting friends have also suggested this trip. And your description makes it all so much more inviting.

luvstoquilt 09-27-2014 05:59 AM

What a great trip you had. I just went on a bus shop hop from Illinois and in to Indiana. It was so much fun. We left early last Friday morning and got home late Saturday evening. I am saving for my next one for sure!

Cecelia363 09-27-2014 07:14 AM

Fun! Do you get to do it all over again when your machines are ready for pick-up?

caspharm 09-27-2014 09:44 AM

It sounds like it was a lot of fun! My DH and I go up to Reno and he kindly takes me to shops in Gardnerville and Tahoe if we have enough time for the side trip. It is beautiful along the mountains and the lake areas (not just Tahoe, but there is a lake between Gardnerville and Carson City - cattle country).

RedGarnet222 09-27-2014 09:53 AM

What is better than a trip like that with your best buds! I am thinking nothing!

caspharm ... That is washoe lake. (I live on the other side of reno in the north valleys)

Tomorrow is the annual fund raiser for Verdi grammar school with a carnival and pumpkin sales. It sounds like something I might take my niece to.

MargeD 09-27-2014 11:04 AM

What a great road trip. I'm sure everyone had a great time - who wouldn't with fabrics, quilt shops, food and friends.

tuckyquilter 09-27-2014 11:11 AM

Nothing better than spending the day with friends. Especially when it's doing something that is a shared passion. Sounds like the perfect day. You made your own SHOP HOP... GOOD JOB GALS.. Well Played.

Penn Yan Sewing makes an appointment with you and you get to pick it up later in the day. That's why we had so much time to browse shops. :)

coopah 09-27-2014 02:57 PM

You made some wonderful memories!

Raggiemom 09-27-2014 03:08 PM

What a great idea to shop while your machine is being serviced! So glad you and your friends had a wonderful time.

You just described my idea of the PERFECT day! It sounds wonderful. I am glad you enjoyed it.

lswan 09-28-2014 04:00 AM

Nancy,
Did you go to Golden Lake right near there? Her fabric is worth the trip from Buffalo. Anytime anyone wants to go to Penn Yann, I am more than willing to jump in the car!

peaceandjoy 09-28-2014 05:59 AM

Iswan - Ada moved last winter to her new store - she is now located between Penn Yan and the Windmill. On 14A, across from the Produce Auction house, not far past Oak Hill. Better location, bigger store, more windows (but still in a pole barn, lol!). Didn't want you to head towards Briggs-Spicer in Himrod to find she's no longer there.

weasier22 09-28-2014 08:57 AM

Your day sounded wonderful and filled with fun! I was born and raised in New York and miss the fall... my favorite time of year. Thanks for sharing your story!

mojo11 09-28-2014 12:23 PM

Sounds like you all had a wonderful time!!!

oldtisme 09-28-2014 02:51 PM

I've always wanted to go up there to the Amish Mennonite goods and fabrics but I don't think hubby would like to pay for round trip flights from S. Texas then rent a car just to travel & buy fabrics & how would I ship any furniture I just had to have :D

craftymatt2 10-04-2014 12:02 PM
