I am going to try this. I was going to do it right now but when I pulled out my "used" blades and ran them across my scrap fabric they cut fine. I am thinking I may be chaning them too soon. lol Anyway next time my blade doesn't cut right I am going to try it. Saves me a trip or a shipping cost.

Try eBay for rotary blades especially bulk buys. I bought bulk awhile back, 30 or so for a fraction of the price @ LQS or even WM. Search rotary 45 or 28 whatever size you need

Thanks soooo much. Going to try this today. I ran over a pin with my Rotary Blade so have a spot that refuses to cut. I'm hoping this will help.

Thank you for reminding me of this tip. I used to shapen my sewing scissors this way all the time when money was tight. It's back to being tight again so this will prolong buying blades.
Yes I have tried this and wished I hadn't. You create slivers that you might not see....ask me how I know.....try embed in the finger and I was being very careful. Didn't see that it made much difference.
I have tried it with rotary blades, and it does work for a while. Faster than changing a blade. I haven't tried it with scissors - but I will. Just didn't occur to me before.
Harbor Freight just opened a store in my little town in CT, so I can buy their blades even easier than before. So now we have Costco and HF - and a BJ's is being built. Why? We're just over the border from NY, have lower sales tax, and just off I84. Easy on and off. Ofcourse, this means even more traffic in my little town. When we moved here 39 years ago (yikes), there were no traffic lights, and we still had several working farms. Now the farms are gone, and I gave up trying to count the traffic lights when I got to 10 ~ |
worth a try! thanks a bunch!!!
Thanks for the tip!
I will have to try this. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tip.
I will have to give it a try.
I'll do anything once or twice or three times-hope it works.
Thanks for the tip I will give it a try
Thanks for the tip. With blades so expensive, maybe this will extend their life for us.
Great idea Charlotte, going to start using it right away. Something so simple!
Thank you - I'll be trying this!
I do it when I'm trying to finish cutting out and it starts to skip, then I get the foil out and sharpen the edge so I can finish, just helps get a few more miles out of the cutter. It does work, but doesn't last too long.
good Luck Suzy |
Thanks for the tip - I will try it soon.

I like this tip! I'll try it asap!
I wanted to say that I have used the Harbor Freight blades& liked 'em. I bought 10 pkdges about a year ago. Of the 6 pkdges that I've opened I've only had 3 blades that were bad.(I did give some of 'em away.) I guess It's about time to drive to Odessa (30 min.s away,) & get some more 'cause I only have one pkdgd left. I'll try the foil first.I also need a 60mm blade but I don't guess I'll get that at Harbor Freight. :) I'm definitely going to try this foil trick on it. Thanks again!! |
I sharpen my scissors and rotary cutter blades by cutting through several layers of sandpaper. It works for me.
Thanks for the tips!!
Thank you for the tip. I can't wait to try it. I just bought a pack of 5 for my 60 mm. As you say, even with a 40% coupon, they are still expensive. I still have a 45 mm that I need a new blade for, so will give this a try.
It worked for me.
I have heard of this for sharpening scissors but haven't heard for sharpening blades. Haven't tried it but will when I get back home. I'm currently in WV in a hotel without my sewing machine! Been here for almost 2 weeks maybe able to come home Friday - Sunday at the latest Am having withdrawal symptoms big time!
Thanks for the Tip.

Worth a try

Today the light bulb finally lit up, and I searched for how to sharpen your own rotary blade. I haven't tried this, but it sure won't cost much to try it. Supposed to work with scissors also.

Not too long ago, I did throw away a bunch of blades, after filling the case that they come in to the brim. That's how it goes when you throw something away, you find later that you could have gotten more use out of them. This information will be helpful though in the future, TY for the post.

I have done this with sissors before.. Got the tip from a friend.. It does work for awhile.. I never thought about trying it on my rotary cutter. I do alot of pp and it dulls fast.. Great tip. thank you
You may have saved my bank account. I have a large stack of dull blades that I could not bear to throw out. I even bought a blade sharpener (the pine where you twist the dull blade against a ring of sandpaper). I couldn't tell that it did anything but make my hand tired. I'll try the foil.
It's certainly worth a try, especially if you are planning to pitch the old blade in the trash. Sharpeners can be pricey and you never know which one to buy. Thanks for the tip.
great tip!
