rotary cutter and ruler combo
My son and DIL gave me a Fiskars Rotary cutter and ruler combo for Christmas; I'm sure it came from JoAnn's. I haven't even taken it out of the box yet because I've considered returning it and getting something in its place (they don't mind if I exchange it for something else). The reason is that I have limited storage for quilting tools/supplies and I've been happy with my 6x24 ruler, plus others, and my rotary cutters, and have never imagined that I'd want or use this tool. So my question is this: is this cutter/ruler combo a valuable tool for the quiltmaker and really worth having and learning to use? It says it will cut up to 8 layers and there may be times when that would be handy. But it's kind of an expensive gadget and unless I hear a lot of praise for it, I may take it back. Anyone care to weigh in?Thanks! (for some reason I create a new paragraph, so this is one long scrunched up post!)

Is this this one?
http://www.allstitch.net/product/fis...FY1FMgodhkAArw If you are happy with your existing tools, I would take it back. It can be nice for a grandchild to use (safe), but is really not necessary for a quilter who is already skilled using regular rotary cutters and rulers. |
Must admit I looked at that a while back - before I bought the Accuquilt Go, but since I had the June Taylor Shape cutter couldn't see what it would really do for me.

Actually it looks like a very nice tool, for someone who has trouble cutting accurately and who doesn't want to purchase the more expensive cutting systems. However, if you're doing fine with what you have, and can exchange it for something you would rather have without hurting the feelings of your son and DIL, then that's what I would do.

If they're ok with you exchanging it, then go ahead. JoAnn's is having a sale thru the Jan 11. You could exchange for more fabric or put toward something you've been really wanting and pay the difference. You're going to need the receipt to exchange. so if you get money back maybe put that toward something totally different. When I have ever exchanged something given to me and picked up something else, I take a photo of it and thank them for the thought and so happy for them not having any hard feelings for a different selection. Then if you decide on a tool or fabric, make them something that you could not have done sooner had it not been the exchange!

I "self gifted" this ruler for myself for Christmas and absolutely love it. I just used it for the first time and cut a lot of two and three inch strips for a charity quilt for my quilting guild. It really cuts easily, doesn't slide around at all and you don't have to press hard on the cutter.
It may not be for everybody but I find it very useful. WHen I bought mine it was 50% off plus there was a coupon for and additional 20% off entire purchase. If you don't have a receipt you may get a refund of less than you think. |
I have one and use it all the time. Seems like it is easier to hold in place.

I too have one and for a while everyone on the board was wanting to get one. The original was friskers and they quit making it. I am very happy with mine and find at a time when ole arthur (other wise known as arthritis) raises his ugly head I can cut non-stop!! Also find it very useful when teaching new quilters and my grands. I would not part with mine.!

I had one some time ago. I noticed that my strips were not coming out straight. Took a close look at it and the cutter and ruler were not properly aligned and so my cuts were off. Took it back and exchanged it, but that was one off in a different place. Gave up on it :o)

I had shoulder surgery and I am starting to lose some strength in my arms. Of course, age helps it along. But I have considered this and the Go because of it. I just cut all those pieces for the Mystery quilt and I had to take breaks and a few evenings to cut it all. I sure hope I can keep cutting for a long time but some people find it good and I might in the near future. I do have the Martinelli cutter and one ruler and love it but I need an edge to use and the one I have is the strips inside the ruler. I sure used it for the WOF and the binding. I want more of their stuff.

Back when my arthritis was flaring badly I found one at WalMart for about $19. Because of the gripper under
surface it was easier to use than my standard rulers. While I don't use it right now, thanks to my QuiltCut2, I decided to keep it. It is on the side of my quilting closet and doesn't take up that much room, |
I had one of the originals! Loved it even though I NEVER got exact cuts! I tried to get one for my mom and another friend. They quit making them and I got a little strip cutter for my mom! If I want to just cut...I love it! It was only 1/4 inch off. (Doesn't work if you are in a swap of exact pieces)!
I will be getting one of these! It is so handy to have the blade there ready to cut! |

Thanks, guys! |
