Does it matter what size rotary cutter is used in quilting. I have only one, a 45mm but I've seen smaller sizes..
What is the difference?

thanks

Smaller rulers work easier when cutting curve pieces..like for Drunkards Path. That's all.

the 45mm is the right one to have.!

The 45mm is best for cutting out pieces and strips. But for curves and trimming "dog ears" I like my 18mm. I have a 60mm that was given to me, but don't think I have used it more than a dozen times in the 2 years I've had it.

I have trouble using a 60mm. It's an older one so I may need to try a newer model.

The 45mm is the size I reach for first. I have a larger one, and if I was cutting out strips for a log cabin, I would use that one. Like Julie said, smaller ones are better for tight curves and some appliqued shapes.

I have a 60 mm and was told by an experienced quilting mentor that she uses it when she is cutting several layers at a time. For example, she cuts strips from 3 pieces of fabric at a time, so she is going through 6 layers of fabric. She said it doesn't "push" the fabric, but cuts through easily. I am still not really comfortable doing that yet LOL!

That's the size I have and it is a good all round cutter.

Doing the OBW I was cutting through 6 layers of fabric, the 45mm blade would not be able to handle that. It would be handy to keep a 60mm around for cutting more than 2-3 layers at a time. :D:D:D

I have the 60mm and I use it the most when I use a rotary cutter with a ruler. Most of the time I use my Fiskars all in one ruler and rotary cutter. It is my can't do without tool.
