Round Blocks
 

Anyone have any ideas for a round pieced block other than the standards like the DWR? Im looking for something without too many seams that can be made up int a circle approx 5 inches from side to side.

Any reason you won't consider applique? Round is one of the easiest shapes to do applique (machine or hand). Cut a circle out of heat resistant template plastic or cardboard the size circle you want. Cut your fabric 1/2" (or more) bigger in diameter. Do a very loose basting stitch around the outer edge of your fabric circle, leaving very long tails on the thread. Place template over fabric (wrong side up) and draw your basting threads tight around the template forming a perfect circle. Flip it over press well, remove your template. Ta-dah you have a beautiful perfect circle you can now stitch down to your background fabric. I did this entire quilt that way. And my circles in this quilt were 5" appliqued on to 6" squares. Wow your quilt is a beauty! I am thinking pieced in the round because its different and not what you would expect a circular block to be. I have a huge Dresdan plate that needs a center and I dont want the traditional appliqued center.

My first thought was a Mariner's Compass, but when you said you want to put it in the center of a Dresden plate, I hesitated. Personally I would not do this because I think it would look entirely too busy.

Ah, I understand now. Mariner's compass and twilight star blocks are traditionally pieced round. For that small a size you will most likely have to draft your own. Judy Mathieson has a great book that teaches you how and includes a pattern for I believe a 6" size. But you still will have to turn under the edge and applique it on once done Well you could piece it in. I've done that. It takes a ton of pins and patience though and I have never successfully done it without at least one pucker. Much easier to piece in 1/4 rounds like NY Beauty or Drunkards path. Is your dresden still in pieces? If so you could join it to the point it is in 1/4 circles then figure out a pieced unit for the 1/4 center. MC could work.

The very center of the MC in this quilt was pieced but then appliqued over the center hole.
