It is a shop hop with some very cool shop designed quilt rows available.

In a nutshell, the organizers pick a theme.
Quilt shops that want to participate design a long narrow block aka a 'row'.
During the open dates, you visit participating shops and get the pattern for free.
Most quilt shops also sell a kit for their design.
You have to go to the shop to get the pattern, they are not supposed to mail it during the specified dates, although later in the year this restriction is lifted.
In addition, you can purchase a fabric license plate unique to that shop.
You can win a prize if you are the first to complete a quilt with a designated number of rows.
Check the link above for all the details.

It can be a swap between quilter too but is mostly known for shop projects. Each shop or quilters involved make a row or blocks to fulfill a row width. When all rows are complete you should have an awesome quilt

Last year during row by row, I happened to be in OR. My friend and I hit 10 shops in 1 day, just collecting the license plates! It was great fun. Some shops on our list didn't participate, some were completely out, but we did well and had a blast! I am from CA, so had friends send me some from there to AL where I live now. Turned out several friends wanted to try to get all states, so we set up a swap chain! Most got what they wanted, some got all 50 states.

OH when the theme was H2O. Water theme. 2015....I went nuts. Bought all kinds of things. Still have some kits that I want to sell since somebody wanted them but I forgot who they were. This year Home Sweet Home theme actually has stores in Europe participating too. Great idea but I heard about it late in the season. Can not sew fast enough.
There main page is on Facebook which I don't want to use. But joined just for Row X Row info. So you can look there for info.
Went to Venice Fl quilt show in March since it offered the first R X R judged show. Have lots of license plates but really wanted one from. Hawaii and even though 2 friends looked there I never got one. So disappointing for me.
Can not afford to go to Hawaii just to get small piece of fabric....

Saw lots of the rows at Toronto quilt show in summer.

Row by Row can also mean a quilt that each row has a different block pattern with each block a different color

Row by Row (capitalized) is specifically the site eparys references. It started in 2014, and has grown each of the later two years. The dates during which patterns can be collected are very limited, starting in June and ending the beginning of September, with quilters having until the end of October to finish, if they can still find a local shop that has not had a winner. (I missed some patterns this year because I thought the end date was later in September than it was.) The first finished quilt, using 8 shops' rows, brought to each participating shop wins a prize of 25 fat quarters, with a bonus prize if you used that shop's pattern. I was a winner in 2015, so I just collected patterns but did not try to compete in 2016.

Row By Row started in 2011 in New York. 2014 was the first year to have participating shops across the whole country.
