I had a rowenta & bought it back you have to use distilled water or it will leak. I have a europro it is a steam machine & iron I love it . It was costly but it is will worth it I do ironing for people & the cloths look like they were done at the cleaners . a good iron will cost about $50

cmilton 12-15-2010 05:34 PM

I hate auto shut off!!! do they even make irons anymore without it? Any iron would be fine without auto shut-off.

Angel 12-15-2010 05:37 PM

You do ironing for people!!!!!
Do you live near me???? :-D

I purchased a new Rowenta at a consignment store for $30. I have been very happy with it.

missionslady 12-15-2010 05:54 PM

I have had several Rowenta irons and have been pleased with all of them. Mine do not have the teflon sole plate; I prefer the stainless steel, and it glides the fabric like butter. The ones I bought are the lower end of their line such as the Press and Sew and and a couple models up, not their professional series. I do not often use it for steaming. I have a steamer if I need to do much of that. I also found one in perfect shape at The Salvation Army and another at a retirement home yard sale, so you can sometimes run upon a good one without paying a lot. I buy them for a sewing/quilting group at the church. The ladies love using the Rowenta irons, so when I run across one at a good price, I usually get it.

adamsallekat 12-15-2010 06:14 PM

I just recently purchased one and I love it.

tlpa 12-15-2010 06:18 PM

Bought a used Rowenta, loved the stainless steel finish, but after awhile had water leakage problems and then had problems with the auto shut off. Bought a new (pre-owned) cordless Oreck, and like it so far. It heats up quickly and I like not getting caught in the cord. As I'm shifting my fabric I put it back on the base to reheat and it works well for me.

kolacequeen 12-15-2010 06:26 PM

I've had an alterations business for 35 years and used to go through an iron a year until I bought a Rowenta. They have lasted the best and I have been very pleased with the ones I have bought.

midwestqltr 12-15-2010 06:50 PM

Several years ago I bought the Rowenta Professional iron. I only paid $50 for it because it was on sale for half price and I had a 50% coupon that I was able to use as well. That iron leaked from day one and just stopped working one day. Bought a cheaper model after that and had the same problem with leaking. I am currently using a Hamilton Beach, which is heavy, and no leaking.

All I can tell you is that I bought a Rowenta Autosteam that was on sale at Joanns the day after Thanksgiving and I'm taking it back. Hope they take it without the box cuz I thought I'd like it and threw it away but I do have the receipt.

The on light never worked and the iron was on all night last night. grrrr ... if the light worked I would have seen it in the dark when I turned off the light. I've read and heard people say they don't like the auto-turnoff on their irons. This one doesn't have it but after last night's mistake, I wish it did, at least it wouldn't have been on all night long.

This morning I wanted to iron a blouse to wear and it wouldn't heat up enough to really iron it good, I couldn't wear it. I don't know if it being on all night did something but I've only used the iron about a week. My old, very old iron (only the 2nd one in over 39 yrs) worked for a long long time and still works but the heat on it wasn't as hot as it used to be either. So this Rowenta is a lemon OR ....

Today my friend said that she used to own Rowenta and it lasted for years but not anymore and now she just buys a Black and Decker and figures she'll replace it each year rather than pay big bucks for an iron with a big brand name that doesn't pay for itself in the long run.

my 2 cents.

luckylindy333 12-15-2010 07:19 PM

I have a Black and Decker that I hate. It shuts off in the middle of ironing sometimes and it is too small and light. If it shuts off and there is water in the resevoir, it starts leaking. I am on the search for a better iron, definitely!

kathdavis 12-15-2010 08:00 PM

I did a lot of research before I purchased my new iron by reading review after review and I ended up with a T-Fal one. I've had it since Mother's Day and I love it. I purchased at JC Penneys for $29.99 or $39.99. I can't remember. They put their irons on sale often.

ploverwi2 12-15-2010 08:12 PM

I on on my second Rowenta. They are awesome. I have the one from QVC this time, and it is wonderful. I like that the steam only comes out, when I hold in the button on the handle. It is on the underside, where you are grabbing and holding on, and it is not stiff or hard to push in. I love the iron, because I can do both dry and then steam, anytime I want.

Please, don't buy a refurbished one. The warranty is no good. I tried that once, never again. Mine is called a Rowenta Steamium. It is much nicer than the $100.00 one. I wasn't crazy about it. This one has far more surface area that the steam comes out of. Also, you are supposed to use regular tap water with this one, no distilled stuff. They say it may harm the iron. This one is not teflon coated but is stainless steel, also, of course it has the auto shut off, but I haven't ever had problems with that. I pick it up and it turns on right away.
I hope I have helped a little. I know it gets frustrating and confusing when buying irons. I had a Shark, and took it back, lousey iron from K-mart.

Yes, indeed they do. Well, ok, I think so. Mine is from Germany, about ten years old, and it does not have an auto shutoff. OH - How I hate those things !!

Name brand is Laura Star, it comes with a big pot that the steam goes in (I never use - but it takes tap water) and a heavy duty cord that connects the pot to the iron. There is another electrical cord which connects to the wall. I love this product. I did look for an American iron those many years ago but never could find just what I needed. My DH bought this in Germany for me, as he was familiar with what I wanted.

But after all these years, I only use Mary Ellen's - the pot of steam is a waste. I don't iron clothes - except mending of course - with it.

Earleen 12-15-2010 08:26 PM

I passed up a Rowenta at Sam's for $69.00 sounds like it might have been a good pass.

connie_1936 12-15-2010 08:32 PM

just got an Olisio from hubby for my bday, love it. i have bad arthritis an this iron is so easy on my wrist and hand. don;t have to lift it. just slide it to the fab. this is a new model and stays hot for 30 minutes before the auto shut off shuts it down. have had expensive rowetnas and prefer the Olisio.

barbrdunn 12-15-2010 08:44 PM

I have had a refurbished Rowenta a couple years ago and I really love it except that the lever that you move to put on the "steam" setting keeps slipping back to "dry"...solved that with a piece of duct tape to hold it in place. Other than that I like it. It produces a nice burst of steam when I need it for a particular seam and is quick to heat back up after automatically turning itself off. Don't think I would buy another refurbished one though. Perhaps if the price was right I might buy a new one.

I have a Black and Decker from Wal - Mart and it has been great. I bought it in the very early 90s and it is still going strong. It has both steam and spray and an automatic shut off after 10 minutes of sitting upright. It heats up quickly. I know I didn't pay over $30 for it. I had a more expensive iron from Sears before this one and after a few years it started giving me shocks every time I tried to use it. I always wondered about the Rowentas. I guess they are the same as anything else. Some work and last and others don't.

How long does the auto-shut off take to heat up again after it shuts itself off - like, I like to sew something(s) together and then go by the board and iron the seams or whatever - but if I took longer than the iron thought I should have and shut itself off - how long does it take to heat up again? Thanks.
Marysewfun :-)

I turn it off and unplug it each time I walk away. That is why I love it. It takes about a minute or two to get hot enough to iron. Just about enough time for a refill, or potty break. I have never had the shut off, have to shut off, because of the way I use it, but I'm glad it has it in case I forget. MY DH had a home burn to the ground many years ago because of an iron left on. Out of respect for his issue, I turn it off and unplug each time. He's a keeper, and whatever makes him happy. I don't have the money for all the 'bells and whistles' that others mention here, but I'm glad they can. I'm strictly a hobbiest. :)

kathidahl 12-15-2010 09:13 PM

Really like my Rowenta...love my DH.

purplefiend 12-15-2010 09:44 PM

I have a Sunbeam Steam Master, was about $30 @ Wal-mart.
This one has a retractable cord too.
It gets nice and hot, steams great and doesn't drip(really imp.)
Its my second one, the danged dog was laying underneath the ironing board and got tangled in the cord; it fell on the floor and cracked the top part.
I've had the current iron for a year and no problems at all.

Jo Mama 12-15-2010 11:11 PM

I bought a Rowenta at Tuesday Morning for $40.00 - certainly not the top of the line but it works just fine. Also hve a Proctor Silex that I bought at Wlgreens for $6.99. Was on my way to class and realized I'd forgotten my iron. I love it. What makes for good pressing is a good spray. I use Mary Ellens Best Press.

BobbysGirl 12-16-2010 12:00 AM

I had an Olisa (up and down iron) and it lasted about 1 week past the guarantee. I have two other friends that the same thing happened. Just stopped heating. Cheap Walmart irons from now on for me!!

whatever 12-16-2010 12:12 AM

I bought one and have used it twice its a pain so sorry I wasted the money on it

weatheread 12-16-2010 05:00 AM

I have a Rowenta Platium I think it was $160 and the steam is great only had it about 8 months my sister got the same iron loved it at first then about 3 months after she bought hers it started to leak called Rowenta and they told her to send it in and she did and that was 6 months ago and hasn't heard from them since . I love my Rowenta but they have soo many to chose from some are great and some are crap I want to try out the Oliso next you don't have to set it up each time

MissJMac 12-16-2010 06:05 AM

At 70 years of age, I've owned just about every brand of iron - some of my favorites from thrift shops! Last year treated myself to a Rowenta (New, Ebay dealter, $75, free shipping) Love all the steam vents, overall happy with it.
If there is a drawback, its the fact that there's no shutoff switch - have to unplub it. Solution: it's plubbed into a strip with my sewing lamp and I just flip the switch on the strip to turn everything off.

Renoquilting 12-16-2010 07:45 AM

I too have used WalMart irons over the years. If you drop one and break it, it doesn't hurt so much to replace!

lovequilting2 12-16-2010 09:58 AM

I have an Olisio also and I love it!!! I purchased it on Ebay for $20.

shamrock 12-16-2010 11:37 AM

I am not ashamed to admit it, when dh & I married 25 yrs ago, I was still working and he had been keeping his own house for many years. He loved, still does, to iron. So he has always done our ironing, and he used to go through an iron a year, because the steam wasn't right, or something else. He finally bought a Rowenta, probably 10-12 years ago and is still using it. I do ocassionally use it also and like it. (I have my own little cheapie one upstairs for quilting. The dial is not easy to read, but its ok.)

GloBug 12-16-2010 11:52 AM

I receved a Rowenta about 10 years ago as a gift.I love it.
When it gives out I will replace it with another Rowenta

You may like to check out thE RELIABLE iron, many quilters

really like this iron.

dunster 12-16-2010 12:35 PM

I have posted this before - I will NEVER buy another Rowenta. I loved the iron - when it was working - but the service when I had to send it in after a few months was horrendous. It just died again, and I will give it a nice burial rather than buy another Rowenta.

zaza 12-16-2010 07:51 PM

Go to garage sales and buy a really old iron (like my mother used to use). It works great, it gets hot or cool. It's perfect. You have to plug it in but old fashioned works great for me.

Dee 12-16-2010 09:44 PM

I have my Rowenta now for 5 years and never had a problem. I bought the Rowenta from Nancy's Notions for about 80.00.
The old one I had from the 60's lasted 20 years before it died. Best Iron, but heavy.

Treegal 12-17-2010 05:12 PM

We have been having a lot of luck with a plan old Black and Decker from Sears ( we even found it at a discount store for less than $30.00)
Good luck !

wraez 12-17-2010 05:43 PM

Just came back from Joanns after returning the Rowenta that wouldn't get hot enough to iron my blouse.

While I was there they had selected Rowenta brands at 50% off so I bit the bullet and bought another one, but different model, looks like a bit of an upgrade on the one I returned. With the 50% and 20% off total, it came to about $2 less than the other one.

Sure hope this one works great and for a long time!

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

morforles 12-17-2010 06:46 PM

I have a Rowenta that I just love! I bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon and it was way less than $100! I believe it was around $50 with the discount. Happy hunting!

G'ma Kay 12-17-2010 07:38 PM

I love my Oliso. got it at JoAnn's with a coupon. It's made in the USA, and have had no issues with it in the two months I've owned it.

MarySews 12-18-2010 12:05 PM

My first Rowenta was a reconditioned model and I had it for a long time -- I iron a lot. when that died, I purchased a new one at Sears one day when they had a sale -- it was quite awhile ago, but I think it was about $50 with a coupon or something. It was a Rownta sale, not a Sears sale because Macy's had one for about the price, but Sears was closer to my house.
I love it and it has a lot of steam but goes through water quickly, lots of steam, water--dah. I finaly figured it out.

sewdarnbusy 12-19-2010 10:42 PM

I bought a Black and Decker iron from price club for $10. It worked great for 20+ years until I dropped it and cracked. It started smoking soon after that. I unplugged it, cut the cord off and tossed it in the trash. Then I bought a Rowenta iron from Costco. It's a piece of junk. Still using it, but it takes forever to heat up. I'm gonna buy a sunbeam next time.
