Ruler extension base

I am new to quilting with a long arm. I have a question. Do you use the ruler extension base often enough to make it a worthwhile purchase? I don't want to buy things that are either unnecessary or won't be used much.

Hi Vera, I recently got a long arm machine and part of the package was the ruler base. Mine is on my machine all the time I enjoy doing ruler work. If you don't think you will be using rulers then it is not necessary.

sary to have. :)

If you plan to use rulers for making straight lines, etc the base is a must...you won't be able to use rulers without it...properly...if you are doing pantos or free forming doodling, feathers etc...you won't need it...I use mine all the time...for ditch work too..

I like doing ruler work, so the extra expense of a ruler base was worth it to me. I find myself doing ruler work on almost every quilt i do, whether it it stitching in the ditch or cross hatchs or triangles or piano key borders...you can make lots of designs with straight lines!

I use mine a lot for ruler work. Compared to other options this one is relatively inexpensive, but you can always add it at a later time if you're doubtful.

If you're only doing edge-to-edge or freehand quilting, then no, you don't need a ruler base. But as soon as you want to do stitch-in-the-ditch or any custom work with rulers, then most definitely yes! I personally love ruler work, so I have a base for each of my machines. Occasionally I take it off and forget to put it back on when I need to use a ruler, and it most definitely does NOT work well without!! ;-)

The quick answer is "yes" I use it enough to warrant the purchase.

It comes as a surprise to me that any long arm sold new does not include the ruler base. I use mine a lot but I also do a lot of ruler work.

The purpose of the ruler base is to give the operator a solid surface under the quilt so the ruler stays in place accurately. If you are going to use rulers or the acryllic templeates you really need one.
