Ruler work

1 Attachment(s)
I think it was Gina Perkes on YouTube that was using pieces of shelf liner under her rulers to keep them from slipping. I thought I would give it a try and bought a roll for $2 at the $ store. I used a strip under my Bernina ruler with the wavy edge because I have been having trouble keeping it in place due to the fact that the foot has to ride in both the valleys and peaks. It works really well and all I have to work on now is keeping my stitches even. The shell liner also works well under my regular rulers for cutting. I have enough shelf liner to last the rest of my quilting life I think.:D

I will tackle this when I get better at FMQ :)
Looks good!

Great idea! It would not work so well if you have to see through the ruler to line up registration marks, but otherwise, a great solution. I use a really grippy, clear, self stick sandpaper like Handi Quilter sells, as I use the etched markings on my ruler templates. That shelf liner also works well for hanging onto your quilt to move it for FMQ'ing , if you just use a couple of small scraps under your fingers, instead of gloves.

Who would have thought? Not me. Amazing what quilters come up with.

Well, for heaven's sake! I didn't have a clue about rulers for quilting - now I'm on the hunt! I've been using the sticky-on paper that one quilts through or just meandering. Thanks so much for sharing.

What a neat idea! Will have to give it a try.

Thank you for sharing. I have rulers, and have been discouraged about using them due to the slipping!

I use shelf liner under my rulers as well.

How clever. Thank you for sharing...

I, too, use this method since I saw Gina do it in a video. Best tip I've seen in a long while.

Thanks for sharing! I keep a roll in my sewing room for a multitude of uses such as tightening the screws on my machine embroidery hoops, under my foot pedal to keep it from sliding, etc. Just the other day I cut a small square to put under my shaving cream can so that it doesn't leave rust rings on the shower shelf!

My goodness! After 20 years of frustration at not being able to keep my ruler from slipping, I see a tip so simple, it makes me slap my forehead. I currently use little sandpaper discs, and still have to fight every time I cut.

sylviasmom 09-14-2017 01:40 PM

I usually buy the round jar openers made of this. One, I keep in my sewing room, cut 2 inch piece, great for pulling the needle through thick fabric.

jillmc 09-15-2017 04:27 AM

Thank you for sharing this info and picture! I have a roll of this liner in the pantry.....off to move it to the sewing room!

I use Invisi grip on the back of my rulers so they don't slip, wouldn't that work for this also? Especially if you did have registration marks to follow.
