Yes I love this mat also for exactly the same purposes as you!

My favorite ruler is the 6 X 12.

I use my 6" X 24" ruler the most, then my 6" X 12"

I'll be going to a missions conference in AZ and then fly to SC to see my three college kids and then to FL to see my parents and twin sister for a couple of days and then back home to Poland to get back to my youngest two kids. I probably pretty much need to know what I want before I head back both because of time and because of money. I need to plan carefully. Money always flies out of my wallet very quickly in the states. :)

Bring lots of light weight summer clothes as it is very hot in AZ right now. Have a safe trip.

Right now Walmart has allot of their rulers on clearance. I just bought two of the June Taylor rulers on clearance there. They the also now carry the 12 inch rotating cutting mat at a very reasonable price.

Blessings!

My favorite ruler is a 3-1/2X 9-1/2 inch one I acquired somewhere. It's great for small cuts. For larger cuts I swear by my 6-1/2 X 24 inch ruler. I love my Shape-Cut. Yes, you need to fold the fabric, but only in quarters across the width of fabric, not hard. The most important accessory to get for your rulers, however, are the silicon "grippers", those little round nubs that go on the underneath of your rulers to keep them from slipping. I swear by them!!!! Please enjoy your trip!!!!!

I love my 12" square ruller. It's great for sizing blocks.

I use my 6x24" ruler the most followed by my 6x12" & my 6"square up ruler. I use them with my green Olfa cutting mat & it is self healing. Just remember to give it a bath from time to time to keep it supple.

I would buy the largest olfa mat you can find (I like the 24 x 36) and the June Taylor shape cutter and the Creative Grids ruler (6 1/2 x 24 1/12) All are truly worth their money. I use very few others. I would also buy the suction cup handles to put on the ruler and the non-slip grips for the bottom of the ruler. Creative Grids could be ordered on line if you can't find it in the stores. They are so much easier to see than the Omni-grid rulers.

I had a nice surprise last Christmas, big box I couldn't figure out (I usually guess everything I get). Hubby decided I needed a mat. It's 3'x5' and fits perfectly on the counter between dining room and kitchen. It is not an Ofla, and may not be self-healing, but I guess I could get another one if it gets too "rutted".

I use my 24" x 6" ruler most often. I find the others are often too slim. I've ran into trouble not realizing some rulers have 1/2" built in on the side. (usually highlighted) So, I think I'm looking at 2" and really it's 2.5" The same goes for squaring up pieces. Supposed to be 10" and end up with 10.5"
