I was shown by a teacher earlier this year to check your ruler as well. Some of the newer rulers are not true or straight. Also get a ruler with the thinner lines because you get a more accurate cut each time. Some rulers including a few of mine have wide lines and can throw your pattern blocks out by up to 1/8th inch. So check them before you buy them by taking a good tape measure with you when buying that important ruler.

My widest ruler is 8 1/2" but I have squares of 8 1/2', 10 1/2". and 12 1/2", 15" and my newest is a 20" square. These take care of most of my measurements. I needed to square a 16" block is why I had to get a new square, it makes it so much easier.

I knew I could count on my quilting friends. I'm going to try all your suggestions and see which works best and I'll keep you posted on my results. I have seen the 20" square and thought about getting it, but I want to try and find the Creative Grid brand rulers and see what types they have, too.
