Ladies and gents; This past Wednesday, I decided I needed an accountability partner, one who DOES NOT quilt, for my own sanity. I drove 3.5 hrs out of my way to go to a fabric shop to buy fabric, of course, and left only b/c I realized that I really did need some $ for food purposes on my business trip. I have quite a bit built up in my stash, minus batting, and need to do some making of quilts and things before I can even think of justifying buying more fabric. This is not from DH but from me. I think that I somewhere crossed a line within myself in regards to my fabric buying and so asked a friend a church to be my partner. She is more than happy to help me out and she does not quilt so this will help me. We contracted that I would call her before doing any fabric shopping so we can talk about it and she can rake me over the coals and tell me, truthfully, that I don't need any more fabric. Sorry this is long but I needed to tell some people that may understand why even if no one agrees. i am actually interetsted in others' reactions/thoughts to this posting.

LOL!!!
Many of us have a similar issue. Sometimes I just NEED to buy some fabric. Unfortunately (well not really) my church friends are the ones I go fabric shopping with!!!!
I am trying really hard to keep it reined in for right now. I have another daughter getting married in October and I need to save for a big wedding!!!

Just 2 funny.. I was showing hubby some online photos of others sewing rooms the other day. One had an entire wall with 3 units of shelving. The entire wall was packed with stacks of fabric. DH's reply was, she'll never use all that in a lifetime, and you're nearly that bad... Whoa there! I don't even have a real sewing room dedicated to just that. Granted, I have my fabric stash but nothing compared to a full wall. (yet)

It seems though, that there is always just something that jumps out at you that you absolutely MUST have, you know.

Good luck in your fabric 'diet'...

Chris,

Ditto!! Of course, I made the decision today because I ordered an embroidery machine (whoops!) so the $$$$ is still being spent.

I have made the decision of "NO NEW PROJECTS" until I finish (completely) at least five. I am allowing myself batting/thread as needed - but NO FABRIC. (we'll see how this works after getting that new machine...)

I did the total opposite. I had a good friend whom I used to quilt with. I actually taught her to quilt. The first few times we went fabric shopping she always got a few fabrics, only fall colors, browns and greens. Very muted. Pretty, but not in abundance, and definitely not for me. Many times I got fabrics and she came out empty handed because she couldn't find anything she liked. It got to the point that I stopped asking her to come with me, because she got nothing. She still quilts, but all the quilts look the same to me. We are still friends, but our styles are so different, she can not sew in the same room as me. She even stopped coming to the guild meetings, because she only likes one kind of quilts and if there is no nature, pine trees and leaves, she wants nothing to do with it. I tried to open the door to other possibilities, but he closed the door to that.

Gee, wouldn't it be awful if you lost her phone number? lol.
Actually, I think you have done a good thing if that is what feel you need to do.

I'm thinking that I would lose a good friend if I tried this. The first time she tried to tell me that I shouldn't shop, I would say something like "who the hell are you to tell me...". I hate when other people try to tell me what to do, even if I know it's in my best interest. Better I just continue to shop. :D

Friend and I made an agreement on a moratorium on fabric buying - for the most part it's working - we kind of modified it a bit so we wouldn't feel guilty if we needed to get something for a particular quilt we're working on, etc.

It's not that we weren't using the fabrics we had in our stashes but that the stashes were getting HUGE - I have enough fabric for quite awhile and if I get all it used up THEN I'll think about getting more... but it was getting ridiculous! LOL
