I made a smaller version of this very pattern (square - 9 blocks plus borders). I quilted starfish in the border and little waves in the "water" rectangles. Turned out really cute. And easy.

how about a "knock off" of the one on pottery barn kids. just large squares with appliqued boats, schools of fish, etc. you can freehand draw your appliques, then sew and quilt to your delight. you could use a print or solid on the backing and whatever color scheme will work for the baby's room.
