San Francisco (area) Quilt Shops
I am headed to San Fran in April and was wondering if anyone could recommend quilt shops, fabric outlets or other interesting shops.
Thanks! |
I live 40 miles southern, so can advise two shops which are great, but a little southern from SF too…

You have to go to Britex in San Francisco it is an experience. New Pieces and Stone Mountain & Daughter are both over in Berkley. If you get over to Concord Thimblecreek is one of my absolute favorites

Britex has a lot of fabric, but not necessarily quilting fabric. I had had high hopes when I went there but was disappointed.
I haven't been to this place, but I understand they do get cotton -- but you might have to dig a bit: http://www.scrap-sf.org/ |
If you get to the South Bay, I'd also recommend "The Granary."

There also is the cotton patch in Lafayette, little closer than thimble berries. Also Beverly's Crafts and Fabrics have stores in Daly City, Alameda, and Concord depending on where you staying. Stores in Alameda and Concord both sell quilt store quality fabrics on bolts and prices can be little less than the actual quilt stores. Went to Stone Mtn recently and their prices have gone up a lot recently and my local Beverly's in Alameda has same fabrics for little less. Both stores are great to check out though! Stone Mtn also sells fabrics for clothing so if you sew clothing too and need a silk or wool it is good store to check out

I agree with others. Britex in the city is a lot of show and no go. Prices are very high and while some interesting fabrics are available, the fabric and accessories have little application to quilting. I really recommend the stores in Berkeley--they are worth the trip. If you are a "bargain hunter" you can't go wrong with Stone Mountain's Daughter. Their sale racks in the back are phenomenal. I recently went in for one yard and left with 20 yards of material ($4.75-5.10 a yard) of civil war prints ( Marcus, Windham, ThimbleBerries, RJR, Maywood, Moda & others) which was great. If in Berkeley, check out Berkeley Bowl--a great grocery store as well.
