To Sash or Not to Sash?
1 Attachment(s)
Hello Quilty friends. After the last three butterflies are finished, I should be sewing these quilt blocks together. It is a charity quilt. I was not going to sash it because that is my least favorite part, but now I wonder if the quilt really needs the sashing. Opinions please?

I like it as is https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Only if you need it to be bigger, looks good without.

Your quilt is pretty, very light and spring like. I took the picture into Paint and added black lines. Don't laugh! I need a real ruler in Paint. The black sashing effect will add drama to the quilt and bring out the butterfly bodies. But both are pretty, and it's just whatever you want to do.

As is no sashing, it has a very soft muted feel, very pretty!
|
I like it just the way it is. Your butterflies are perfect.

I'm going to agree with everyone else, no sashing because there's such a light, airy, springtime feel to it. Very, very pretty, congratulations!
|
looks just fine without the sashing. Great job!

No sashing - especially if you hate doing it. If you need it to be larger add extra borders.
|
I like it the way it is! Pretty top!
|
I agree with comments already - looks great the way it is!

I don't think it needs sashing although I would certainly put a border on it. I think it makes it look finished.
You quilt your way. |
It is so very thoughtful of you to create this for a charity. Whatever you decide the person that gets it will be very lucky.
|
If it were my quilt, I would add a white or neutral sashing, although the black sashing also looks good.
|
either way will work. I like it the way it is

Also agree with the majority that it doesn’t need sashing. It’s going to be a lovely cozy quilt for someone. We’re the butterflies paper pieced?
|
I like it just as it is!

I don't think it needs sashing because you have alternating blocks. If you had nothing but butterfly blocks, I would say you need sashing. But I think it's perfect the way it is. Kinda like the butterflies are floating around in a meadow of flowers, and there's no sashing to stop them. 😁

Thank all of you for your thoughts on sashing. This was my first post and I appreciate all of the input! I still haven’t decided. If I sash I think it would be white, and mostly because I would like it bigger. I also think I may add a light aqua border with a darker teal binding. We’ll see!
barb in Louisiana~thank you for taking the time to show me what it would look like with sashing. That is a helpful program! jmoore~The butterflies are not paper pieced. They are from a Riley Blake Designs free quilt pattern called Hearts Aflutter, which I am changing up a bit. It is a fun pattern! And I like free! heathermom2~Our church ladies make tops at home and then once every 3-4 weeks we get together and layer, tie, and bind them into comforters to be sent overseas to needy people through Christian Aid Ministries (CAM). They can use 100,000 comforters per year! Last sewing day we made 57 comforters, which was our record! It’s a really fun day to get together to work with fabric and yack with your sewing friends! |
I also like the way it is!

I really don't think you need sashing as you have a print block separating each butterfly block. Very pretty quilt
