Does anyone do this stitch? And is it very difficult to master, I would like to try it.

It is a simple running stitch. I did it once and used crochet cotton with an intricate design. If I were to do it again, I would use something with a smoother texture such as embroidery floss or maybe a finer crochet cotton.

It has been at least 10 years since I did this and you may now be able to get ahold of the thread for it, we've come a long way, baby!

there is a good Sashiko book out there. I know i have gone to a class about it but Can't think of the teachers name off the top of my head. Sorry

I've done this as long as I can remember, it's the way I do my quilting if I'm doing an outlining something that I want to pop. Didn't know until recently that it had a name. LOL

I love to do Sashiko. A friend of mine couple years ago, introduced me to this. I got hooked. This is a picture of the quilt top I am working on now.

It has 16 13"x26" pre-printed sashiko squares. Then there are 9, 12 1/2 x12 1/2 Sashiko/hand applique blocks. Sylvia Pippen Designs.

I have only 1 book, Sashiko Style, that I really like. Great patterns, instructions, and good pictures how to do the stitch.
I plan to purchase more books. I also have a couple Japanese fabric quilting books.
