sashing for 1930's quilt
Need opinions...have recently made blocks that are of the 1930's fabrics. The fabrics are a mixture and some are done on a white background, some on a light tan, some of other colors. Need ideas of what to use for the sashing. A tone on tone in light yellow or tan? A batik? There is no particular color that stands out but don't want anything that has a bold pattern. I'm having a hard time visualizing what would look the best. Thanks!!

I would find some scraps of solid color and lay out your blocks next to them untill you find something you like. Even try your darker colors, brown, drk gray, can't hurt to look. If you don't have the scraps, take a sample of your blocks to a fabric store and lay some out there.

I am thinking of the old quilts I have seen with either the shell pink or sage green sashings. Ot I have seen them both together too on the old butterfly quilts. Southern women typically used light pastel solids to set thier quilts at that time. But there is the solid white or beige fabric.
I would suggest to lay out your blocks onto an open piece of fabric. That audition might help you decide. |
Why not take your blocks with you to a LQS. They will have a table somewhere that you can use to audition for your sashing. remember you may also want cornerstones.

A picture would help. If you made the blocks with 30's fabric, I would stick to that for the rest of the quilt.

no batiks.......i just don't think they would work well

I agree with previous post , batiks is not a good choice for 30's reproduction fabrics. If you had and can post a photo of the blocks that would help alot.

I agree , not a batik. I saw one with aqua sashings it looked great. Try a pindot. I usually do what AliKat suggested. Take some blocks to the store at least 4 and try different fabrics .

I have used the banana yellow and the 1930's blue on 1930's scrappy tops and really like how both looked. I'm thinking pink next.
