I have made a cute embroidered baby quilt for my GD. My DD wants "silky" binding. I want to leave it as wide as possible. I left extra batting and backing around the edge for this purpose. My problem is that I am not sure how I should apply it. Should I sew it on the front and turn under 1/4" on the back and hand stitch it or sew it on the back and bring it to the front and zig zag or fancy stitch it down. Any advice would really be appreciated. :)

I have never used it, but the quilt is adorable!

I've used it on a baby blanket. It turns out so nice. I stitched it on the back and then brought it around and, using my widest zig-zag, I zz'd it onto the front. It turned out great!

the way this stuff is made you can just slip your sandwich in between the layers and pin well and sew on the front with a decorative stitch and your done.

I believe that is the way they are done when you purchase a ready made one. Or you could put a small decorative stitch on it.

I would sew it on the back and flip it over to the front with a zig zag to finish it. Beautiful quilt, Grandma!

Does DD want it narrow or wide? Some kids want the wider band so they can rub it against their face. I would find this out and then decide how to apply it :D:D:D

I have done it like Kathy and katiebear1. I believe if you go to the site of the company, that's the way they suggest. And, it's easy! One step, but make sure you catch the back,I use a wide zigzag. It makes beautiful mitered corners too. My gkids love the silky feel. Your quilt is lovely!

She wants it wide so GD can rub it.

I am just afraid it won't be strong enough for a little one to drag around if I don't sew it on the back first. And, I probably wouldn't catch both edges evenly. So I think I will sew it on the back and bring it to the front and zz it. Thanks for all the ideas.

I used the store bought satin binding. It is already pressed and folded perfect so I just put my quilt between the folds, used a wide fancy stitch and did both sides at once. Made a nice mitered corner with it too. Worked well for me

Since it's for your GD I would attach it to the back and stich it down with a frilly decorative stich on the front. :D :D :D

donna i can see in your avatar that you added the binding. can you tell us which method you ended up using?

is the quilt going to be used or is it to be put in the cedar chest or hanging on the wall.
The satin ribbon will not wear well. whilt it can be done consider the use of the quilt and possibly select another fabric. The 80/poly 20 cotton Tramode has a silky look and would be more durable. I bought some cotton/silk combination from Keepsake Quilts. I personally would not want to put the silk ribbon on the edge as there is no stretch to it and I would finid it aggrivating to apply well.
